BOX FITTED AND TESTED

Got the box in and went for a test drive. Filled with Millers CRX 75W90 NT oil.

I've got a little whine at about 25mph. I can't quite work it out but almost certain it's just the noise of the 4.45 final drive that's either a touch worn or just a little noisy. Above this speed it's silent.

I 'think' I've got a little oil leak... will check this.

I can certainly vouch for fitting new syncros: 1st to 2nd gear is lovely - even with the short shifter. You might remember that I fitted late style sintered syncros for 3rd and 4th? These are meant to be tougher and feel quite different to the original ones. You need to be more positive with the change and they do change faster - about 1/2 the time but are not as smooth. I'll give them time but I'd say they'll suit slamming gears much more than smooth slow changes. No matter what I do, they wont crunch though, which is good.

4.45 + 9-3 fifth gives me indicated 78mph@3000rpm and actually feels pretty sensible.

Have not floored it past 3krpm yet... (30miles done so far) and to be honest I am really happy the fundamentals worked and it didnt self destruct by the end of the street...

Hi Faero,
First of all, have to thank you for your dedication in writing this long and detailed thread. It helped me lot as I finished rebuilding my gearbox only a week ago. Took some pictures but there is not much to add to this thread except for the diff preload which was different in my case (saab 9-5 aero, as per wis instructions). However we have one thing in common. The slight whining which I am not sure where it may come from. The reasons I can think of are 1) slightly worn crown wheel 2) Input shaft preload (i tightened it to 0.05 by accident) 3) diff preload maybe a little too tight.
Anyway, since it has passed over a year, can you let us know about the whine you experienced. Has it changed (deteriorated, disappeared). My box whines in low speeds (up to 10-15mph).
I dont really know how this forum works but if anyone is interested i can ask any questions or open another thread on this topic.
