Hiya Chrise, The car in question (the AWARD wining, one & only black 1998 9-5 Aero lookalike in the land!) has got ACC yes. Tis the same car featuerd in the seat heater, SID 2 & ACC pixel reairs threads, oh & in the tail end of Jimmy Winns retro fit parking sensors thread too!............& its all mine!

I have never done a fan motor change on a ng900, but another member was asking me about this the other day.
From the pics I found it does look like a very similar job to do though.

This is the pic of a ng900 (1995) heater blower fan motor,

Now, I dont know if this part is removed in situ from inside the car or if it can be done from under the bonnet. Im sure someone will be along to fill us in soon.

Hi johno thanks for the reply that diagram should prove handy, I'm sure I saw something like that when I changed the pollen/cabin filter recently and to change that you also have to remove wiper blade arms plus a plastic cover that runs the width of the bonnet so it seems very similar, fingers crossed its also the motor bushes that are faulty. Thanks again btw nice motor you have there, looking at getting a 95 when it comes to changing the 900 still happy the th mo though. :D :D :D

Hello first post/question. I think the heater blower thermal fuse is maybe the issue and have found this topic.

The one on my 93 convertible looks similar to the one posted above numbered 4 but there doesn't seem to be a number 3 fitted to my car. Is this a different model?

Unable to post a picture, but the part I have is like number 4 above, it has a small, what looks like blue resistor between two of the connections but I cannot see the part shown above numbered 3. I have taken a photo but canbnot upload it for some reason.

Symptoms are fan running all the time, even with igniotion off, unless fuse pulled.I have removed cover under bonnet over fan motor, found the connector and expected to see a large resister underneat but nothing, just the part at 4 above.

I am hoping the small blue 'resistor' on my car is the fault it is soldered between the two tags on part 4.

Good Evening Johno,
Your description of symptoms mirror my heater fault. Having studied your excellent rectification details I will be on to it as soon as time permits. I did go stark raving mad and buy a Haynes manual to see if there was some way of putting a supply onto the blower before pulling it all apart only to find there is no circuit diagram relating to the blower motor in the book.
Great piece of work.

Terence

Hello there Terence & welcome to UKSaabs. 8)
Glad my little "how to" was of some help to you.
Its not that hard a job to do really, running some power to the motor to test it would be good, if it were eaiser to get at. Finding the wiring at the fuse box end might work though.
The Haynes manual eh, theres an idea............If you have got a wonkey table!
Its not bad for some jobs, not so good for others.
Keep at it matey & let us all know how you get on.
Its good to get as much feedback as possible in the Knowledge Base threads, & if someone else can improve or make a job a bit eaiser then thats great.
Enjoy your Saab matey.

Good Evening Johno.
Successfully completed the blower motor repair. It did however take me seven hours, which did include a trip to my local motor re winder for a pair of over size brushes that require some adjustment. Other than that delay the only problem I experience using the strap wrench technique to move the bulk head forward was acquiring the right amount of clearance to lift the fan out. The problem was resolved by clamping two flat steel bars to the centre of the bulk head with a pair of mole grips and hitching the strap to the top of the moles which gave plenty of leverage and stacks of room.
All in all a very successful day for just £10.00. Hate to even think the price Saab would have charged. You have saved me maga buck for which I thank you very much.
Sid one and two are now on my list for next week and will be deal with according to the technical gospel of Johno

Brilliant news Terence, & thats what its all about matey.
Main dealer charge would have been through the roof for this little job.
Ten quid & a couple of grazed knuckels is well worth it.
Being at one with the 9-5 & saving a few quid gives me the happy factor. :D

Hi guys,

Replacement brushes for Valeo heater motors are available on ebay.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... :MESELX:IT

A word of warning. Be very careful if you try to use alternative brushes (ie from powertools, washing machine etc) If they are not the correct grade of carbon then you may cause more problems. If the brushes you choose are too hard then you'll wear the commutator of the motor, if they are too soft then the brushes will wear prematurely.

I tried some old washing machine brushes in my motor and it made it squeel like a pig. Fitted the brushes from ebay and the heater motor is now as good as new.

All nice and warm again for £15.

hey johnny, great timely thread.now, instead of panicking about mega bucks fix on my blower fan,i can do it myself on a weekend.(incidentally,i have the dreaded 08 diagnostic on my acc. and have discovered that the little white plastic thingy that usually breaks, broke on mine)!i was wondering if,because that is broke, that the rod assembly is what activates the fan? thanks again for the means to once again have a decent cabin temp :D

Hi all
just changed my fan brushes, excellent write up and diagrams / [pictures. Hardest thing is pulling the false bulkhead back far enough. I used a metal woodworking sash clamp as nothing else available, then needed a second person as I had to hold the clamp from springing off.
I bought my brushes from ebay at £7.00 plus £ 3.00 postage from seller barriestewart1979. They needed a slight dressing to fit but I would recommend them. My heater fan is now working perfectly again.

I would like to crash johno's thread a bit! I had Blackun's motor refurbed about 7,000 miles ago at JamSaab. It cost me

quite a lot (£100+) If anybody would like to buy this motor please feel free to PM me with offers!

Thank you!

(sorry j!)

Cheers Johno, I couldn't have fitted a new blower motor in Robin Morley's 9-5 Aero today without your write up. The blooming wiper arms had never been off before.
It was as if you were there with us, as i printed off your destuctions.
Cheers once again
Tony

Ah, nice one Tony. 8)
The wiper arms do take some shifting, but once they are off the rest is plain sailing really.
Glad I was there with you (if only on paper!) to lend a hand!

Made use of this guide on Saturday, thank you very much indeed.

Wipers... grrrrrrr! Only puller I had to hand was too big to use on the driver side so that one was a case of patience and determination to remove.

One thing I did do differently - I separated the fan from the plastic mounting surround effort (only two screws, then slide it out the guides) before removing. With that done it only took the slightest pull on the bulkhead to have the fan motor out. I think it just gave that bit more space for wiggling.

I have (at least on one side) some heat again... happy days! 8) :D
