can anyone tell me where the E.G.R valve is on a 1.9 tid as would like to clean it as my car is dropping the turbo boost back out threw the air filter at 2000RPM, im just trying different thing to try to cure it, many thanks

Me too please, I haven't got a problem yet but I'd like to prepare myself for the inevitable

First let me say hello . I have literally just bought a 9-3 2.2 TiD 02 plate with 220, 000 on the clock.
Before buying this car I did quite a lot of research on known problems etc and was overwhelmed with the freely given support in this group, a credit to you all .

I have extensively read the forum ref EGR faults and wondered if someone can help with my plight?

Before buying the vehicle I tested the turbo and all seemed ok, so I parted with my cash and set off as a proud owner of my Saab ( my partner now calls it WASSABI)

Anyway everything was fine until about 10 miles when suddenly the engine warning light came on and I lost turbo boost. (Thankfully I had read this forum so wasn't panicking too much)

I removed the EGR when I got home and found the plunger spring was sticking so I squirted a generous amount of WD40 and cleaned the piston and refitted,.

Turbo seemed to work great around town and up to 70 mph but then while cruising the eml came back on and no turbo.

When I switch the engine off for a minute or two and start up again the turbo works fine again (eml still on)

ANY IDEAS WHERE I LOOK NEXT??

Get under the bonnet and take the plastic cover off the engine. To the right hand side of the engine (looking from the front) you will see a wide black rubber pipe which has a left hand elbow in it where it connects to the right hand side of the engine. That tube is the charge air hose, the part it connects onto is the throttle body on the right hand end of the intake manifold. Just above this towards the back of the car is your egr valve. It has an electrical connector on the left hand underside of it and is bolted onto the intake manifold with four bolts, and has two larger bolts running down through it which connect it to the exhaust side. Also to the left of this secured by a single torx screw with an electrical connector on top is your map sensor. If you're going to do a clean I'd do the egr, map sensor and throttle body all at the same time.

Need to get the code read to give a clue mate, when cruising it could be over boost caused by sticky turbo vanes, could be bad vacuum lines, lots of things...

Thanks Steve95. I will pop to my local garage yo find out what codes come up.
Will let you know

obtained fault codes as follows:
PO400 (EGR signal incorrect)
PO234 (something to do the boost governor)

I decided to remove the EGR again and clean with carb cleaner. Copper slip was added to the piston shaft and spring actuator. Also the MAP sensor was cleaned ( the one connected by one bolt to the manifold where the EGR connects to.

Tested the car and now the turbo boosts away with no EML?

NOTICED a fair amount of smoke as I put my foot down --- is this normal or should I be looking for something else as well?

Sounds like a step in the right direction!
All diesels will smoke a bit under load. What year is yours, if it's early enough not to have a dpf it could be perfectly fine!

Hi Steve
Going for a long drive to Walsall tomorrow (100 miles) so should give it a good clean out

Its a 02 plate with 220, 000 miles on the clock.
What is the dpf ? :park:

Just re-read and seen yours is the 2.2. You won't have a dpf (diesel particulate filter - a new fangled emissions gizmo in the exhaust system fitted to later models) so I'd say a bit of black soot out the back when you're on heavy throttle is pretty normal

Hi Steve.

Not sure if this question should be under another topic but here goes...........

Further update.... travelled about 100 miles on motorway today, loads of smoke from exhaust!!!
I have owned diesels before and never had this much smoke!!

Seemed to be worse cruising around 2500 rpm.
Also (something I havent mentioned before), when the turbo kicks in there is a loud HISSSSSS ing noise. My lical garage pinpointed it as the dump valve near the cylinder body and said it was ok :?:

On the way back from my trip (keeping to around 65 mph due to the smoke screen) the eml came back on, hissing stopped (so did turbo boost) BUT......... so did the smoke screen!!!

I drove the reminder 65 miles with limp mode but no smoke, also it appeared that average mpg went up!!

Any ideas or do you know someone who knows these engines well?

What colour is the smoke?
I'm guessing black. Black smoke is over fueling which would tie in with the worse mpg.
If it's bluish smoke then it's burning oil from somewhere.
White smoke it's burning coolant.
If it's over fueling, have you checked/replaced all the small bore vacuum hoses?

Deffinately black smoke. !!

Have changed many of the small 3mm hoses but maybe I have missed one?
Is the HISSSSSSS noise normal during boost?

Now this may not be relevant but I found oil coming out of of the hose that connects the intercooler tubular pipe that runs over the rocker cover to the turbo. I retightened the jubilee hose and no more oil. Should there be any at all?

A small amount of "blow-by" oil residue I believe is fairly normal.
The hiss on boost is not and will be an air leak which will likely be your problem if you can track it down. As per doive's reply on the other thread, if you've done the vac lines then it's prob going to be intercooler pipework, or a split in the intercooler itself.

Got the usual black smoke, poor economy and vastly reduced power on my 2007 9-3 Aero 1.9 TTDI. I'd quite like to give the EGR cleaning a shot before taking it in to a garage. Anyone able to give an "idiot's guide" of where I can find it, how easy it is to remove and how to clean it?

Would be eternally grateful!

Not sure of the layout of the ttid from the top of my head, though I thought the egr in those was more reliable. Your problem sounds more like a split / leak in the intercooler, intercooler pipes or vacuum system

Hi
From my very fast learning curve, (member since Feb 2013) I wouldnt think its the EGR as normally you would also have the engine management light, EML, showing.
As previous message from Steve ( who has been tremendous help to me) I would check all vacuum pipes for splits and also a tight fit. My 2.2TiD pipes had somehow expanded and were very loose.

The MAP sensor should also be cleaned with carb cleaner. ( mine was sooted up)

good advice, been looking into doing this for a while. got a 2.2 tid and its only getting around 28/29mpg around town which isnt great. the egr is fairly new but my turbo was on the way out and spewing oil into the the intakes so needs a clean out. will have to do this over the weekend, will try the sensor first and see how that goes.

why do they get so coked up?, is due to diesel being different from when these engines were designed?. started adding two stroke to my fuel as well to make it burn better, does work but i guess the crap thats already in the intake needs sorting out.

Dave1980 wrote:why do they get so coked up?

The clue is in the name mate - egr - exhaust gas recirculation.
For the sake of emissions, on modern diesels, a good portion of the black sooty smoke that used to be chucked out the end of the exhaust is now instead pumped back into the intake manifold to be recombusted.
It seems to me to be the mechanical equivalent of plumbing your toilet waste pipe into your fresh water supply to save the poor sewers from having to carry it away...
