Help identifying a cars spec and valuation.

After a browse around the forum, this looked like the most appropriate place to post. Hopefully I'm right.

I feel like a bit of an imposter, as I do not personally own a SAAB, but I am here on behalf of my Brother-in-law who does have one.
Please bear with me as I explain.

My Borther-in-law, Chris, has just been diagnosed with multiple brain tumours, and doctors have given him just a couple of months to live. His pride and joy is a 2008 SAAB 9-3 Convertible, which he's no longer allowed to drive for obvious reasons. So I've been asked if I can help sell it and hopefully raise some funds to pre-pay the funeral so it's not left to his widow (my wife's sister) to deal with. My wife and her sister are still grieving from the death of their father just before Christmas so I'm sure you can imagine everything is a bit crap right now.

Now the problem is, I know very little about the car, SAABs aren't my area of expertise (sorry, I'm a VW guy) and Chris is in a situation where his brain is a bit all over the place, so
1. I can't really ask him about it as he might tell me a load of nonsense, he's currently struggling with timelines and is just as likely to give me information about a Vauxhall Cavalier he had 20 years ago. He keeps calling his wife by his ex-wife's name - you can guess how well that goes down. and
2. he gets tired easily so I'm trying to take as much as I can off of him and the family.

On the weekend I picked up the car, gave it a clean and took some photos. It's the first time I've driven it. It's a very nice car.

Now I know the year, and I know it's diesel but I don't know what spec it is or how to price it.

I have the VIN so was wondering is there somewhere I can enter this and get some more info? I know there are sites that do this for VW so hoping for the same.

Post moved to ''What's it Worth?
As this is a more appropriate section for your questions, as you are essentially looking as an end result for a value on the car.

Sorry to hear about your brother in laws diagnosis, with your father in laws death its obviously been a pretty horrendous time for the family lately.

I hope any advice your given on UKS helps in easing the load.

Any valuation given is the posters opinion, you would be better looking at what similar cars are advertised for on Autotrader and the like, or what they have sold for on eBay etc...

The archives on here will also give you an indicator on asking prices.

if you post a photo and the VIN I'm sure someone with more knowledge of this particular model will be along to help.

There’s a VIN decoder here. You need the second list for a 2008 car.

Thanks, and thanks for moving. I wasn't sure if What's it worth was the right place as I need to know what it is yet.

Doing a look up on Parkers with the reg is says it's a

Saab 9-3 Convertible 1.9 TiD Vector 2dS - but states available new from: January 2006 - June 2007, but it's an 08 Reg and appears to be the facelift model so I wonder is this correct?

There appears to be a Vector, Vector Anniversary, Vector Sport and Vector Cerulean. It has parking sensors which are only listed as an option for Vector Sport.
And how do I know if it's a TiD or TTid (160 or 180)?

I've uploaded more pics here - https://eddypeck.wordpress.com/2008-saa ... ector-2ds/

I've just worked out I can't read all of the VIN and I don't have the V5 yet, I've left that with Chris for now.

Thanks, looking at this it seems to have a mix of the first list and the second list. The '6W' before the X (check digit) looks like they come from the first list as they aren't in the second list.

I echo 'Espin99T's sentiments.

If it helps, I paid just shy of £3K for an '06 2.0t (petrol) with 80k up 4 years ago and a pal paid £4.5K for his nice, low mileage '09 1.8t (petrol) a couple of years ago - both were purchased from a dealer.

The dealer from whom I bought my car is currently listing 3 convertibles:
1 - An '08 Diesel at £4500 - https://saabtec.co.uk/listings/saab-9-3 ... nvertible/
2 - An '11 Petrol at £6995 - https://saabtec.co.uk/listings/saab-9-3 ... w-mileage/
3 - An '09 Diesel at £6500 - https://saabtec.co.uk/listings/saab-9-3 ... w-mileage/

This should give you some idea of where to pitch a private sale. My own gut feeling is that an '08 Diesel in good condition could therefore be worth between £3 and £4K as a PS, but others may differ. In your favour is that late Spring / early Summer is traditionally a good time to sell a convertible.

Regards, John.

The handwritten VIN is a bit scrawled.

The VIN of the car can be seen on the plate in the bottom corner of the windscreen, and also on the label on the door sill at the bottom of the middle door pillar, passenger side. The label also has the month of build on it, and a row of codes along the bottom, giving the suspension and brake details as it left the factory.

10th digit of the VIN is 8. So 2008 model, but that could have been built any time from autumn 2007 onwards.

Thanks all.

It's beginning to come together. I just want to be able to give an accurate description when I put an ad together. I found an online Vin decoder and the scribbly bit appears to be FF which corresponds. I've given the car back now after cleaning and taking the pics so I can double-check when I'm back with it.

So I'm looking at https://www.vindecoderz.com/EN/check-lo ... WX86010842

Production 03.04.2008
Engine: B308I V6
Engine (LRD) Z19DTH[LRD] DIESEL ENGINE
Trim_level TL20
Frame_color 1XU

Can anyone shed any more light on these codes?

That is not right at all.

The B308 engine is a V6 petrol that was only fitted to the 9-5 from 1998 to 2003.

This is the label you need to find on the door pillar...

And there is a label on the lid of the glove box that gives the body colour and the trim code...

I've updated the list in the VIN decoder I linked to above.

http://www.saabtechtalk.com/forum/index.php?topic=789

I'm wondering if the 7th digit in the VIN is mistranscribed as 6, when it should be a C?

If so,

The car is a 2008 Saab 9-3 Vector Convertible with a 5 speed manual gearbox and a 150 hp 16 valve diesel engine. Made, as many of the convertibles were, in Graz, Austria.

Well I can confirm it's a 6 speed manual

I looked it up in the official Saab workshop manual, but it wouldn't be the first time that their data is wrong!!
