Bosch K-Jet troubleshooting.

Dear All
I am hoping someone out there may have come across a fault similar to mine, as am getting pretty desperate!
I recently tried to re-commision our old 900, which had been stood idle for 10 Years, despite having done only 66k miles.
Applying a very basic logic i first: Drained the fuel tank, replaced the fuel pump, pump rubbers and fuel filter after blowing through the fuel lines. Then added fresh fuel.
I then replaced the spark plugs, leads, rotor and cap and coil and leads for good measure, after checking the compression which was very good.
Oil and oil/air filters also changed, and i did my best visual inspection of the vacuum and air lines.

To my surprise and pleasure it started well enough but would not maintain an idle, and kept stalling, whilst sounding a bit rough. I had a known good cold start valve so tried that from my other running 8v.

Since that point it cranks over and fuel gets through, but the thing refuses to start or even cough. Old valve went back on but to no avail.

Any ideas gents, as have spent two days on it now, and considering hitting it with a very big hammer!

Thanks in advance All the best mark

Would suggest you are missing the spark element for combustion

ASSUMING YOU DO INDEED HAVE A 'SPARK'?

TRY REMOVING GROMMET IN TOP OF INLET MANIFOLD,POUR IN AN EGG CUP OF FUEL VIA FUNNEL,REPLACE GROMMET AND CRANK ENGINE.

IF IT FIRES&RUNS FOR 5 SECS OR SO,THEN FUEL DELIVERY IS YOUR PROBLEM.

CONNECT PRESSURE GAUGE,AT FUEL FILTER.

YOU REALLY NEED TO ASSESS THE FUEL PRESSURE AT THE FUEL FILTER IS AROUND 5.5-6 BAR.....DO NOT TRY TO 'GUESS'!

IF YOU HAVE FUEL PRESSURE THERE AS STATED,THEN THE NEXT STEP IS TO REMOVE INJECTORS,USE CARE AS THE PIPEWORK CAN BE BRITTLE(STILL CONNECTED TO PIPEWORK) AND PLACE THEM CAREFULLY IN TWO CLEAN MARGARINE TUBS,ON TOP OF THE INLET MANIFOLD.

REMOVE RUBBER BELLOWS FROM K-JET UNIT,AND THERE WILL BE A 10MM HEADED NUT ON THE CIRCULAR BASE PLATE. BRIDGE FUEL PUMP RELAY WITH A JUMPER WIRE(FUSE BOX)AND GENTLY PULL UP THE BASE PLATE WITH A PAIR OF PLIERS ON THE 10MM HEADED NUT....

THE FUEL INJECTORS SHOULD EMIT A HIGH PICTHED SQUEAL AKIN TO A DOLPHIN.....AND FOUR GOOD SPRAY PATTERNS.

NO FUEL,OR JUST A DRIBBLE COULD MEAN YOUR K-JET FUEL DISTRIBUTOR IS BLOCKED,OR THE PISTON ITSELF HAS CORRODED,OR IS STUCK,WITHIN THE K-JET UNIT. THE INJECTORS SHOULD ALSO BE TESTED AT A SUITABLE 'FUEL SPECIALISTS'

THE ONLY OPTION,IS TO FIND A GOOD USED UNIT,WHICH MUST HAVE BEEN ON A RUNNING VEHICLE,OR KEPT IN STRICT CLEAN STORAGE. OR HAVE THE UNIT REBUILT.....

THE POOR IDLE WILL LIKELY BE THE 'WARM UP REGULATOR' ON THE SIDE OF THE THERMOSTAT HOUSING......IF&WHEN YOU ACTUALLY GET IT RUNNING...

Hi Birdie
Thanks for the detailed information, much appreciated. I have access to a scrap car so am able to swap parts around, so will try your suggestions at the weekend.
All the best Mark

Hi Birdie
Thanks again for the info.
You were bang on with the info. I cut short any diagnostics and just pulled the whole injection system off the donor car.
I did test the injectors as you suggested but they sounded like quite a 'poorly' dolphin, so again used the donor ones!
This made a massive improvement. Having swapped the injectors and cleaned the AIC, re-sited all the vacuum pipes and bingo perfect idle and confident starter.
Think i probably need you on speed dial.............
all the best

GOOD MORNING MARK,I AM UP AT 05.30 EVERY MORNING TO DEAL WITH 'PROBLEM CARS'
(AND THEIR OWNERS  ).........AND THAT, IS JUST 'VIA' THE INTERNET.....

THEN AT 07.30 I GO AND DO IT FOR 'REAL',ALL DAY EVERYDAY..... :wall: :haynes: :loco:

MORE READING ON K-JET HERE....
viewtopic.php?f=35&t=203747

I AM AFRAID THAT IF EVERYBODY HAD ME ON 'SPEED DIAL', I WOULD NEVER GET ANYTHING DONE.....

CHECK YOUR FUEL ACCUMULATOR IS NOT LEAKING! IT IS MOUNTED ON THE UNDERSIDE OF THE BOOT FLOOR......

EVEN IF IT IS BONE DRY? YOU MAY EXPERIENCE POOR 'HOT STARTING', AFTER THE CAR IS LEFT FOR 20 MINS OR SO?ESPECIALLY WITH THE CAR BEING LAID UP...

THE 'FUEL ACCUMULATOR' WILL BE YOUR CUPLRIT.....

JUST A THOUGHT FOR THE 'MODS'.....?

MAYBE YOU CAN 'STICKY' THIS UNDER 'K-JETRONIC' SO I DON'T HAVE TO KEEP TYPING THE SAME THING,OVER&OVER AGAIN AS IT WOULD SEEM A LOT OF 'UKS' CHAPS SUFFER ISSUES WITH K-JET.....?

Good idea Mr Birdie, certainly worth preserving this info for posterity.

If its been stood i would remove the airflow meter unit and strip, clean, and reassemble.
I suspect the metering pin is stuck.

Then ensure the metering plate is clean and not gunked up. And perfectly centralise it within the unit and tighten the centre nut.
