Just had uotes for my 96 2.0 convertible - 37y/o, no NCB, insured as a classic fully comp. All £800+ apart from Flux who were £310, and then Footman James came in at £220 including euro / windscreen / breakdown etc included.

What sort of percentage hike do mods mean? I realise this is depends on a number of factors, but I was wondering in ballpark terms? I pay 300 fully comp (business etc) which I am happy with. I bought my car used, and it appears the front brakes have bigger rotors than standard, and there has been a PCV#6 done as well. Does this fix count as a mod in the eyes of insurance companies?

Has anyone had experience of declaring only braking modifications?

With many mods going to a specialist can make the premium cheaper as they rate based on the type of owners that they insure.

Just braking mods is a difficult one as some will see that as a higher risk as you will be braking more aggressively, some will see it as a safety improvement.

To give an idea of mods, the insurers base their pricing on the standard parts list for that particular model. You should be declaring optional extras in full disclosure, these rarely have any impact on the policy price, but do mean they are covered in the case they are damaged in an accident. If not declared the insurer does not have to replace them, they most likely will but better to be sure than have a dispute later.

Also, it is always worth getting a written confirmation of any modifications declared. There have been quite a few instances of issues when claiming that the underwriter had not been told of the modifications by the broker (so they could win the business) and there was no documentary evidence the owner declared them. More pain that could have been avoided.

I had the Megane (2005 1.5Dci 106 5dr shed) policy come up for renewal.

Currently with A-Plan who underwrite ERS on it at the moment. Don't know what it was last year as I switched cars mid term on this policy from an old quattro to this run around. I have the T16S on another policy also through A Plan.

I'm 31, wife 33, 9 years NCB been driving on a full licence for 14 years, points all gone and one no fault claim (hit by thrid party moped whilst my car was at work in the car park in 2009), cheshire post code. Car value of £1500 at best and I've got business on this bad boy too.

A-Plan wanted £488 FC.

I rang CK and they came back with £427. I rang Prestige and they came back with £389 (both offering discounts to UKS members). I rang A-Plan again and the best they could do was £417 (why they didn't offer this in the first place after stating it was the best match for me in the initial renewal.

Then I banged it through moneysupermarket and got £254 from Swift. Checked the policy over and it's all good.
Still more than I wanted to pay for a diesel shed but far more palletable than £488 :cen:

Just received my renewal quote from Greenlight: just over £500 with protected ncb and an agreed value. Mileage is limited to 5k/year and excess is £250. Underwritten by Highway.

Does this sound reasonable? Any other brokers worth trying before it runs out (1st September)? Bear in mind the agreed value of £4k which Adrian Flux, for example, would not offer although their premium was around £100 less. :corn:

Probably about right. Although I found Greenlight gave me cheap quotes for a modified car on-line, they kept increasing it by large amounts when I phoned them and added a few minor things, like a second driver and a few more miles than their average.

Thanks.

This will be my second year with them, and considering the total package I don't think it's too bad. In my first year, due to the large amount of modifications they were unable to quote online, so the first quote I received was by telephone. I don't need second driver or any other options so will always be politely refuse when offered.

Just checked again and the renewal premium is actually £50 less than last year, plus they are now protecting my no-claims. :D I haven't had any accidents lately, but foolishly I cancelled my insurance several years ago as I didn't need a car. Not normally a problem, but it was over 2 years later before I decided to buy a car again, whereupon you lose all ncb :( Lesson now learnt :bag:

Sure, I could go elsewhere for a lot less and then be offered £250 when it inevitably gets rear-ended at a junction

Mine is due as well. Elephant posted my renewal at £400 with 13yrs NCB and one claim. Rang CK and got it down to £344 fully comp, mods declared, unlimited mileage and excess at £250. That is also underwritten by Highway.

Seems good but bear in mind mine is extensively modified plus I have an agreed value in case of write-off, not book value. There don't seem to be many insurers that offer this.. However, I'll give them a try anyway. :)

Update: Tried CK (not even close) then Adrian Flux, who beat Greenlight's quote by £40. However, I hadn't heard of the underwriter plus they were a bit evasive when it came to quoting me an agreed value, suggesting this couldn't be provided until after I'd taken out the policy. Eh? What if they only agree £1k for example... :loco:

Went back to Greenlight and advised them of AF's proposal whereupon they matched it straight away. Not sure whether to be pleased or irritated :D

Still, worth a few phone calls - during work time, natch
