2009 9-3 Sportwagon exterior door handle failure. FIXED

The Saab has developed a strange problem.

The exterior drivers door handle needs a really big pull to open the door. You can open in normally and easily with the handle on the inside but you need a really hard and snappy pull on the outside to get it to open. This isn't a fault that has developed slowly like a stretched cable but an instant fault, it worked one day and not the next.

Do the handles come out via the bung in the end of the door shut? Doing a search only seams to give info on the prefacelift doors not these doors which look identical to my old vectra and there handles could easily be taken out via undoing the torx behind the bung, lifting out the short fixed part of the handle (the bit that houses the key lock) then sliding out the handle, is this the same for the 2009 93?

Thats great cheers, exactly the same as my old vec. Hopefully the handle just need re engaging. Doest look good having to lower the windows with the key fob to open the door :)

Re seating the door handle didn't work unfortunately.

I've taken the door card off to work out the mechanism and found loads of spray white grease, its on the latch as well. Anyhow, when you pull the handle it transfers the movement into a downwards movement of a long metal rod which is threaded at the end, this in turn is clamped by a plastic block which then transfers the moment to the latch.

Does anyone know if this is adjustable, the thread on the rod looks like its there to help the plastic block/clamp grip onto the rod, it looks like there is a catch on the block so it can be opened but its hard to fully see.

Hopefully this image works, if so sorry for the poor quality, you can see all the white grease and in the very centre of the image the orange clamp/block with the metal rod going into it.

Just a little update if anyone is having the same problem.

It turned out the fault was actually the hinge pin in the handle mechanism that had partially fallen out, which was why I also had a woolly feel to the handle.

Easy to fix, Door card off (t30) door handle off via (t20) then you'll see a single t20 at the front where the inner handle mechanism attaches to the door, remove that and you can take the mechanism out through the inner door. Simply drift the pin back in and resemble.

Thanks for this update. Had exactly the same problem on my 2008 9-3.
