9-5 mirror fitting into 9000

Hi

This is a guide for installing the 9-5 auto dimming mirror into a 9k.

First off you will need to be aware of a few things.
This is for the Euro model 9k
Inside the 9k mirror is an aerial for the keyfob
The light behind the 9k mirror doesn't quite fit behind the 9-5 mirror.
The 9-5 mirror doesn't leave much space for the "Fasten Seatbelt" light.

Tools:
Crimps
T-25 and T20 Torx.
Flat screw driver
Wire strippers
Soldering iron.

Take your 9-5 mirror and extend the black and red wires by about 6 inches using a soldering iron, a butt joint or hook joint will do. Shrink wrap over the connections.
Cut the other three wires from the connector and tape them to the back of the mirror stalk under the plastic cover. (If you want the 9k light pop off the plastic cover and tape the wires beneath where the cover would be.

Pull fuses 3 and 16.
Remove the t20 torx bolt holding the white plastic cover over the map lights
Next remove the T20 bolts holding the mirror to the roof of the car.

Unscrew the four T25 bolts holding the black plastic with the map light to the roof. (Two are hiding under the headlining)
The plastic should drop down.

Unclip the two electrical connectors for the antenna and the light.

You have two options here.
1. Destroy the 9000 mirror to get the full length of antenna. (Very fun and many years of bad luck)
2. Cut the wire at the back of the 9k mirror and strip back the wires. White is antenna, black or no insulation is the shield.

Here you can now decide what you want to do with the 9k light, i personally glued it to the back of the 9-5 mirror and stuffed the white wire of the aerial inside it, the black wire can be crimped onto a circular tag and put onto one of the torx bolts.

Refit the 9-5 mirror with the 3 T-20 bolts

Here you will see a few switches and some wires. Look for a green wire coming from the back of the map light, next to it should be two wires they should be brown/white and blue (live on run). Pull it out of the holder and cut the crimp. Fit a new crimp with the red wire from the auto dim mirror onto it, remember to use a rubber or plastic boot to cover up the crimp.

Now there should be a 3 connector plug on the switch that controls the middle roof light of the car. There is a black wire, grey wire and two green wires. Take out the black wires and cut off the crimp. Here you may have to destroy the holder so that only the grey and green wires are in the holder and the black side is removed. Crimp the black wire from the 9-5 mirror onto this and the other two black wires.

Push the wires back up and reconnect the 9k light if you are using it. If you want the seatbelt light, you will need to bend the contacts a little bit. Refit the cover and fuses then test the mirror! A lamp shining on the front and putting a hand on the sensor hole on the back should prove it works.

The mirror itself uses roughly 1.2W or 140 mA when it's polarizing which dips down to around 100mA and so you should be perfectly ok with the massive 10 Amp fuse for the circuit. A 5 amper would probably be more sensible, especially if you've switched to LED's.

Sorry for the lack of photos!

Sorry for the lack of photos or no photos? lol :corn: :corn:

I like it when a good retro fit mod is done successfully and shared. I will be looking at doing an auto dimmer mirror on my C900. I have a spare 5 series BMW auto-dim mirror kicking around :park: :loco:

I imagine it'll be a similar fit, just look for power that is on when the car is running and tap off of it. The worst that can happen is that you will blow a fuse.

How do you know?

It only works when you are in the night, if you put your hand over the sensor hole on the back and shine a light onto the sensor on the front it should dim. You need to push the button in ... i think.

You can also test it on a bench power supply. It will probably dim if you have the mirror facing you and the roof light shining on it.

I should really have taken photos. It would have been less confusing. A multimeter gives away the secrets though.

Please at least post a final view photo, as it is one of my small dreams to have an auto dimming mirror in my 9k Aero.

Seatbelt light is very tight, and I decided the mirror light wasn't worth the hassle of fitting it, but it all looks factory.
