Hi all,

First post and first Saab...didn't take long for the first breakdown...!!

So We have an older tried and tested 93 1998 2.2tid currently with 148K and sounding well, it has a round pure vacuum EGR as per the photo on page 2 of this thread. (Same as a frontiera I think)

Problem is CEL came on for a few mins at startup then went out, drive maybe 5 miles and on it popped again. Read about cleaning the Egr so took it off and did the biz with carb cleaner and a smear of copper slip on the main shaft as it enters the body of the egr......

Startup....fine.....drives 12 miles not a problem car feels smoother, seams to pick up a little better.
Brakes for a turn, changes down a gear up pops the CEL and now stays on......

I don't see a hole in the pipe going to the EGR, but all advice and pointers are welcome..........

4 weeks ago the nearside front spring snapped as i turned a corner, then a week later i lost power and found my main intercooler pipe that goes to the top of egr valve had split. not too mention both rear calipers seized and had to replace one of the calipers and renew pads.
This car has to be the most unreliable car i have ever had in my life ( i have had a few) i have spent a small fortune on it and it is now up for sale. Every time i get in it i expect something to go wrong with it.
It's a pity as i really liked the look and when it was working it drove really nice, the seats were the most comfortable seats i have ever had and it had all the extras you could ever want tbh.

I have bought a ford mondeo mk4 (new shape) 2.0tdci titanium x. :)

Hi everyone.... I bought a 52 plate 2.2 Tid Se and Loved driving it.... for the first week. One problem after another, Turbo related, and it ended up going back for a replacement engine. I got the car back yesterday and on my way home the light came straight back on again. So, thinks I, I can take it back again or I can have a go at this "easy fix" that I been reading about. Took it apart and sure enough...
Image

Just when I thought I'd cured the problem and was putting everything back together....

Image

Please tell me I can repair this or replace the tube. I haven't got money for a new ERG and I'm now stuck.

HELP!!!

If it was me i would take it to a garage and ask if they can weld it back on using oxy acetylene braising, or failing that file off that lip and jubilee clip some longer hose onto it.....the garage wont charge much to weld that on.

The "lip" is less than 2mm so the chance of Jubilee clips working are Slight. aparently no one around here can/will braise it back on either, so....

I've been outnd bought some copper pipe (brake pipe) and some chemical weld.... Gonna have a try at drilling out the old one and making one to replace it.

Will post how I get on.

You looked for any splits in the hoses from the intercooler and the turbo?......or the actual intercooler?......... cos in my case i had both happen to me with my 9-3.

Been looking today... Seems that when the "mechanic" replaced the engine, he found every old pipe he could to chuck in there.Cracks and splits on at least three pipes..... I'm sure that when I bought the car we looked at pipes and they looked pretty new.

If that's not enough I've just been on the phone to the garage were I bought it as he had to replace the two front tyres when I purchased it for the MOT and they are suddenly worn out again.... He recons I'm mucking him about as tyres don't wear out that quickly so either I'm wheel spinning everywhere or I've changed the tyres to cause problems.... :wall: :cen: I really wonder if his "mechanic" is in with him or is he ripping of the garage too?

Sounds like the guy on last weeks watchdog (rogue traders)..... report them to trading standards and go to another garage next time.
So are you gonna replace the pipes?....some of them are £150 each from the dealer or a copy from ebay is around £50....thats just the one from the right hand side intercooler to the egr valve. I taped and tie wrapped mine to fix it (tried rubber tape first but it lasted a day before it found a way out).
Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Has anybody had any experience of wanapart?

The reason I ask is they list a replacement EGR valve for £66.12 which seems a little on the cheap side.

That's not a picture of a EGR valve from my saab 2.2 tid? Look at the pictures on this thread to see what it should look like. :)

Nuts, you're right. My fault for just using Google to search sites.

The correct part is £235

You tried cleaning it which is what this thread is all about?.....you might be surprised at how clogged up with carbon/soot these can get.....my old calibra and vectra were shocking when i took them off and the car ran sweet as a nut when cleaned. :)

Hi all,

I've got a bit of a flat spot on my 2001 9-3 (158k) and was going to give cleaning the EGR a go over the weekend. I have one question though. Is there a gasket for it? If so, do you need to replace, or can you reuse?

Thanks
Mike

IF YOU NEED TO REMOVE THE EGR VALVE. Remove the inlet manfold elbow to do this depends on your car year this is also for 2.2 9 5 owners need haynes manual 4614 to work on 2.2 tdi
. remove to cover three screws, put out of the way,if you need to remove screws holding wiring tray from cam cover@ inlet elbow.remove any wireing to elbow undo @Hoses on elbow move out of the way. undo the remaining bolts holding the elbow to manfold you will need to clean the elbow.use carb cleaner, a old school way is to soak in coke drink as acid in it softens the carbon.the clean the inlet
manfold with carb cleaner and egr valve with carb cleaner wipe out softend carbon with a rag
