It is pretty grim across the board as far as I can see. Did a scout around when I renewed a couple of months ago and came back to Elephant cos I couldn't get cheaper elsewhere. I have four years no claims with this car and yet the premiums go up instead of down every year. Someone is using the economy as an excuse to roger us all royally, and they are all in it together I am quite sure. Grrrr. Sorry got a cold, the first one for almost a year, and in a ranting type of mood today :-)

In General, insurance prices have risen by up to 33% this year. We are told that it is because motor vehicle insurance is provided at a loss to the big companies , due to the massive increase in claims and huge payouts awarded by courts. Make of that what you will, but there are so many insurance scams these days, that it's the honest punters who are footing the bill. The new law on insurance will make a slight difference to the cheats, but as always, they will find ways to carry on as before.
The police don't have the resourses to follow up insurance supposedly taken out in eastern europe as the cost is prohibitive, so they scams will continue to push the prices up.
It makes you wonder though, with the European directive that insurance premiums must not be based on gender, meaning that women will have to pay the same as men is another con. Why isn't it the case that men should now be able to pay the same as women! (IE, much lower).
Women should be up in arms, insisting that the premiums for men should come down, instead of womens premiums going up.
Back to the point. I'm with the AA. £161 fully comp, protected no claims (9 years), but I'm old and decrepit, and live in the sticks!

I recommend trying admiral multi car. We have two cars, one being the saab, just renewed for £555. (i had one fault claim on my policy, despite it not being my fault - long story for another day), protected ncd, 11 Yrs. Fully comp.

Due to modification and the accident, other companies were quoting from £800 to over £3000!!

They also beat the online price over the phone.

Do I win a prize?

I'm 19 and have a 2.3 NA GM900.

The best quote I've had is around £2500, which actually is pretty damn good. I've also had a quotes for £8k easy :P I also looked at temporary cover for just the summer; £1000 per month. :O

Its spectacularly cheaper for me to just cancel the £2500 policy after a couple of months; looking at around £600-700 for a few months. Then I do think I'll have to sell it (and be on the look out for a 2.0, probably a C900 too).

I've already got a classic car policy with Equity Redstar through RH Insurance Specialists. They agreed to cover my 1997 ng900 convertible, fully comp., limited mileage of 5000 for £203. And I inly pay £57 for the other car. Not bad.

Hmm interesting. Do you think they'd be interested in covering a 19 year old male? (read: no.) I'll maybe try calling them on Monday.

I had a good policy with HIC which gave free track day cover but they went up to nearly £500. The cheapest quote I could get was £450 with Admiral, when I changed from one 1995 9000 CSE V6 AUTO to another one they wanted to charge me £179 to change over.
The only difference was the colour. The advisor gave me a list of excuses for the hike
- One was a CS the other a CSE
- I wasn't used to driving the new vehicle
- One an auto the other manual
- One was a group9 the other a group 30 (I think because by this time I was starting to lose it)

What do you say to that apart from cancel my insurance and I'll go elsewhere.

It really does make a huge difference on post code and somewhere online there is a list of all the risk postcodes but I forget where. Shame you can't make like the old days when I used to get 3rd party only and pay a pittance.

They don't want your business. Without a no claims record you are not on the insurance database, so are an un-known risk. Some companies are willing to take the risk, often based on your licence being clean. Some companies are not, hence the ridiculous premiums.

Even with no claims bonus, I've got 11 years they are still out to get us. Its their market and due to people screwing the system we all suffer.

My current insurer after a long and weary talk about when I cancelled my previous insurance and sold my previous car and when I started my new policy on the new car and whether at any time I had a car on the road uninsured.....I said can't they just check the insurance database for my no claims and policy details, the insurer said they don't until there is a claim then they pull all the records and licence details to look for any discrepancies in the policy

Charge a huge amount and look for any loophole to get out of paying

My fully comp with the AA costs £161 so I'm not complaining.
It has been there or thereabouts for the last 5 years, with different companies and different cars

Also, remember that modified cars are about as welcome as bodily waste in a swimming pool. Insurance companies view them as a cash cow regardless of your age, experience or NCB. I drive a modified 9K Aero (see my signature for outputs) and am 41 with 3 years' bonus, residing in ME8 post code. Lack of bonus is due (foolishly) to taking out policies and cancelling them after a few months as I didn't require a car for long. I have had a full licence since 1988, have no points and hold a Class 1 HGV (not that this helps in any way...)

My premium was up for renewal recently and I swapped from Greenlight to Adrian Flux (underwritten by Red Star) who were almost £100 cheaper (£500 fully comp with ALL mods declared - I had to complete a detailed modification report and provided a dyno print.) Cover is also like for like, so for example, if my turbo goes awol during the night, they will replace it with the same unit (or equivalent) rather than a TD04, being OEM equipment.

Yes, i've had conversations with others who 'forget' to mention their mods to the brokers, but in effect their cars are then not insured come claim time. I sleep better at night etc.
