The 'Top Tip' on the waterpump bolts BTW is key. We have had to fix so many DIY'ers doing there belts that dont do this and coolant leaks everywhere and they dont understand why / where from.

The bolts lead into the coolant vains of the engine hence needing the sealant.

Likewise with the genuine pump itself. It has a metal gasket preinstalled so no sealant is needed. Sealant on this actually hiners the seal and doesnt help. Just make sure the face it mates up to is clean and dry.

Thanks Steve - Nice to be able to help.

One think I will say - and please - this is not to put anyone off.. But its an important job and really does need to be done correctly - so take time, make sure you are happy with everything, and if it is the first time and you are not 100%, see if you can get some help to show you the first go..

That said - if you are confident with the spanners, its really not to difficult :)

Cheers,

Yes - done a couple of 207 chains, but only a couple...

Done loads of Z22SE plus a good handful of the later Vec-C direct chains. The Z22SE suffered from a design fault in the oil jet causing starvation of oil to the chain. Very common for these to stretch and 'slap' on start taking a guide out of not careful.

TBH - I dont like doing chains, dont really know why. Bit more involved I suppose.

Nice one Ant, good pictures and write up.

I've done this on mine with the help a Saab tech at 50k to be on the safe side.

An essential maintenance job for any 9-3SS/9-5 Tid owner.

MODS: Can this be added to the knowledge base?

Ah great - glad to contribute.

Suppose you want one now for an inlet change on the same engine ;)

Ok, now I'm nervous. This thread has prompted me to dig deeper into the service history of my 9-5. It's had full main dealer history, no expense spared, all it's life, including cambelt at just under 90k. I had assumed this must have included the dreaded water pump. I've just phoned the garage, it didn't. :(
So I'm now pushing 112k on the original water pump :-o and certainly can't afford to get it done this month - xmas, two tyres for mine and a battery for hers has seen to that.
Going to be paranoid at least until new year...

Madness.. A dealer doing a belt and NOT waterpump...

Did they do the belt kit do you know (so new tensioner and roller pulley) or litrally just the belt.. Extremely bad practice to just change the belt unles VERY low mileage on the pump / rollers etc.

I think they said belt kit, I would again assume included tensioner and rollers but not sure, but yeah it is the pump I'm worried about. They seemed quite oblivious to the issue, said they would not do the pump routinely only if it was showing signs of wear/play...

Oh well - at least you know it needs to be done.

'Normally' you can hear them start to go way before they just let go - so you should be OK.

True mate. Just a shame that 1) it'll mean replacing a belt and rollers that have only done 20-30k; and 2) I'll be on eggshells until it's done now.
Thanks for the tip though - I'll be keeping my ears open for any audible signs of it being on it's way out - I'm normally good at picking up on unwanted / unusual noises - that particular 'talent' costs me a blooming fortune lol.

Amazing detail and thank you Ant9-5Aero and and Steve95
Gives me confidence to try it tomorrow now all the bits are here

Now here is the embarrassing bit....
What are the torque values for the various bolts, tensioners etc? I don't have a Haynes manual and my WIS is for 9-5 only...
Appreciate your input.

Standard silicon sealant from Halfords will be fine.
