Need to remove steering wheel volume control buttons

When I press the + volume button it often seems to change source so I guess it needs cleaning inside? (car is 9 5 Aero)
Had a go at unscrewing the fixing on the back of the steering wheel but it was very tight. Is that the only screw that holds the switch on?

The fixing on the back of the steering wheel is the airbag!!

You have to remove the airbag before you can get to the screws holding the switches. It's unlikely to be a bad contact, more likely that one of the resistances has failed. The switchpack works on a resistance ladder. Each switch has a different resistance which alters the current and voltage in the single wire from the switch to the SID which is where the result of pressing the switch is interpreted.

Has the steering wheel or sid been changed? 2003+ SIDs don't work with 2002- controls and vice versa.

Hemel Pete= thanks but after reading that I think I'll just reach over a bit further and turn the volume knob

Pug = no, as far as I know its all original to the car. It only happens now and again so i assumed it needed cleaning

Is it after you've been driving a while or it's hot inside the car?

My SID used to act up after I'd been driving a while and the audio controls did weird and wonderful things. Worked out it was down to the aftermarket stereo cooking the SID, or just high ambient temps, and the internal resistances etc changing, confusing it.

No it does any time random. Its been like it since I've had the car (3-4 years) . Its a bit of a pain listening to the radio ,press the + button and I end up on Tape or CD

Oh silly me the resistors are on the switches circuit boards.

I also had problem with my "connect2"..
It was Volume down not Working ( signal 0,7Volt)
and when all components was warm Volume UP start working as Volume down)

So it was pretty easy to determinate that Voltage signals was to low ( even if they were exactly as the table here earlier 0.7, 1.2 and so on)
i tested wit a 23 ohm resistor in series with te loop ( cut a wire and put the res. in line)
Voila´.. Volume down and volume up worked as it should ( out signal was raised to about 0,95V and 1,5 V)
BUT "Seek >>" then was just working sometimes, so signal out there also raised ( of course) to ~2.5V found that limit for my connect2 was at around 2.45V.

so opened up the Buttons
Switched the Volume down resistor from 82 -> 120 Ohm ( signal out the raised from 0,7V -->1.0V)
Switched the Volume UP resistor from 82 ohm to 56 ohm ( tot. res. from 164-->176 Ohm and signal out Around 1,3V for VOL UP)
Also lowered " SRC" resistor from 120 Ohm --> 100Ohm, With this i have About same Voltage output an all other buttons except volume buttons and now everything works.--

SO if Source is changed when you press Volume UP then you probably have to High output. So put a smaller resistor at Vol Up button)
Maybe that 82 could be something around 68ohm .
the volume up should work, and if other buttons go "crazy" then also switch "SRC button" resistor to a bigger one ( with same difference that you lowered the VOL + button) for ex the current 120 ohm resistor -->133 ohm..
then all other buttons should work as before( and the total resistance is unchanged)

Note the Last resistor (the one that is not connected to a specific button) is not 1000 ohm it was something around 1600-1700 ohms ( have tested on 2different cars, 9-3 My 2000

Last row in table : (none) 4.2 2474 82 + 82 + 120 + 180 + 330 + 680 + 1000

So also the totally resistance 0f 2474 is in real 3600-3700 ohm.s

remove the rubber and give the circuit board and the magnets on the back of the rubber a clean with some IPA. This often fixes these kinds of switches.
