I have no doubt that it's very nice but not £16500 worth IMO.

The ad has a few too many excuses and the pinstriping and Carlsson script is missing. For £16500 it would need to be absolutely concourse perfect and much, much lower mileage for me. Others may disagree.

A slope front 2.3 turbo 9000 is my perfect Saab so I don't say the above lightly!

I remember when this car changed hands for just over £2k 10 years ago.

The buyer then (the current seller) went on to advertise it at nearly twice what had been paid.

Fairly obvious that he has purchased again recently looking to wring some more profit out of it.

Its value is nearer what the current seller paid for it, which you can be assured is well south of the current asking price.

Price dropped to £14,750 from £16,500.

Still optimistic and clearly above what was paid for it recently.

Just goes to show what sort of profit the seller was looking to extort from any unsuspecting buyer :corn:

Price dropped again to £13700, you can be assured the seller still has a profit worked into that price.

It is a beauty, given that decent condition Aeros and Carlssons are trending around what, 5k? I can see the leather, alloys, slam pannel, a lot of work has gone into making the car mint.
How much more is it worth for a mint example?
Looking at classics in general a minter may go for twice an average condition car. I wouldn't be surprised if you could sell this for 8k, maybe more to the right buyer.
I can't see it selling at the current price though.

There was a black flat front one listed a year or so back, not far off similar condition.

Asking price on that started at £5k+ and steadily dropped to around £4k.

Not sure if it sold or was pulled.

£10k is probably about top whack for one of these unless its mint, totally original and very low miles.

Started at £16500, just dropped again to £12500.

Still optimistic at that price.

Good info, I hope it sells high.
Seems 9000 prices has finally started rising a little for the top specs. I think the majority of adverts are starting off overpriced. It doesn't help when people look at the adverts that have been up on and off for months and months and think the listing price is what they sell for.

I had a 1991 9000 2.3 Turbo. Mine had ACC and TCS, suggesting that this might have had TCS originally. The rear wash/wipe has been retrofitted with a later system, original equipment used a dash mounted switch that washed and wiped as one action. This has a switch on the stalk that allows wash separately from wipe, I fitted the same to my car.

Just as installing a new kitchen or bathroom doesn’t increase the selling price of a house, fitting upgraded bits doesn’t automatically increase the value of a car. 1991 was the year where timing chain problems were common on the 2.3 engine, no mention of new chains, has it been done?

I wouldn’t pay anything like the asking price.

You're right, it increases desirability a little

In the same vien I enjoy tasteful modifications but many don't understand most modifications do not increase market value. I'm seeing base spec, stage 3 mods of 9000 for 5-6 keep popping up.
Unfortunately lots of people think that when they've spent money on a new part they can tack that on to the asking price.

If sellers have invested and worked on a car to bring it up to a good standard, you will find enthusiasts and buyers have no issue with asking prices that reflect the investment.

Unfortunately the speculators are moving in, which means asking prices are rising beyond what many true enthusiasts are willing to pay.

This seller is not responsible for the majority of the work mentioned on this particular car, the ad is written in such a way that some will believe the current seller has paid out to bring the car up to its current standard.

But this one was purchased a few months ago by the current seller, it has just had a massive mark up placed on it when putting it back up for sale.

Seems to be happening a lot at the moment, cars are reappearing with a large mark up having just been purchased.

Some sellers are asking prices way in excess of what they have invested in the cars, some are just literally doing nothing and sticking them back up for sale looking to make a fast buck.

It did sound like the current owner has had an obsession with restoring the car. I didn't consider all these high price ads could be resellers.

When all is said and done, is not the selling price of anything simply a matter between the vendor and the purchaser?

Yes, as 'Espin99T' rightly says, there are chancers out there seeking to make a quick buck. That doesn't sit any more comfortably with me than it does with him, but at the end of the day the seller is doing nothing wrong. He is free to ask what he likes for any motor car, or watch, or house, or anything that is his. It is up to the purchaser to decide whether, to him, that represents value for money and is within his budget.

We have recently spent the thick end of a grand sorting out the alarm / immobiliser / locking issues on Linda's 9000. We fully accept that will add not a penny more to the value of the car should we wish to sell. What it may do is make the car easier to sell as it no longer has those faults.

Let's say that based on previous discussions in these columns the car is realistically worth 'x' amount. There is nothing to stop me from advertising it for 2 or even 3 'x'. The car may not sell, or it may appeal to someone who is looking for that particular model and specification and considers it worth the asking price to him - who's to say?

The used car market - including classic cars - is, as we all know, exceptionally volatile at the moment. This is undoubtedly reflected in some of the unrealistic / optimistic prices preently being asked, but will hopefully settle down at a more sensible and sustainable level in the fullness of time.

Regards, John.

As John says a seller can ask what they want, but it does not mean it is worth what is being asked.
Something is only worth what someone will pay for it.

Nobody so far has been willing to pay what this seller is asking, therefore its not worth what he has been asking

Again as John says the market is all over the place at the moment, one of the reasons for that is the over inflated asking prices of cars in the hands of the speculators.

Private sellers are seeing the asking prices and pricing at the same level, the market is then flooded with overpriced cars with few buyers who can or are willing to pay those prices.
Supply outstrips demand and cars remain on the market for ages.

Sellers think that is what they are worth as they are the prices they see advertised, so will not budge on prices.
Result stagnant market with lots of cars advertised for top money but very few are selling.

As I have said before the truly outstanding cars will always sell for good money.

Prices were on the rise, but the speculators have now slowed that rise as they are now asking too much for average cars.
Prices would have continued to rise at a steady level if asking prices had remained realistic.

Again as I keep saying, asking prices are not always selling prices.

Just because a car that is advertised sells, it does not mean it sold at the asking price.

The asking price has been up and down like a yo-yo.

Its been as low as £12500 and it is now back up at £16500.

The current seller is trying to wring a profit out of it like he did the first time he purchased it.

The ad is written as if the current seller has done all the work when it was all at the expense of the previous owners.

The car is well known to many on UKS having passed through the hands of several respected owners and some maybe not so over the years.
