Forum rules

When you put a new thread up in the Workshop please put your car's year of registration (not plate or model year) in the post subject/thread title, along with just a brief indicator of the problem.

Registration Year - Car Model: Brief description of issue. EXAMPLE- 1999 9-3. Problems starting when hot.

For Tech II issues or help requests please state the following in your title ''Tech 2 help required - state issue and your location ''.

Please also add as much information as you can about the problem, to your post.

This will help us to help you, without having to ask basic details such as what car you have.

Threads with non-compliant titles will be moved to The Pit Lane (in which no replies can be posted, but the OP can edit the thread - upon which the thread will be released to the workshop forum, note compliant threads will be moved back when the mod/admin team next visit the Pit Lane. if your thread has been sat in the Pit Lane for 24hrs+ after editing, pm Tech II to request release)

Nb. Generic thread titles for truly generic issues that genuinely are not model or variant specific (such as "how do I change the spring in an forge wastegate actuator") are acceptable

**The first 5 posts for new users require individual moderator approval (which they will only get it if they are in line the rules of the forum). Please be patient and allow time for that to happen, and avoid duplicate postings.**

2009 93 Convertible roof fault, local specialists have given up.
Sorry, first post on here....
After swapping out all sensors, and two attempts to fix, the local specialists say it needs 'programming'.
(My roof says 'soft top obstructed' each time I accelerate, and 'manual operation' when I try to put it down. It was working a few months ago, but went from juddery and stop start to not working.)
Does anyone know anywhere in the north or central Scotland that are good at fixing roof faults?
Many thanks

Welcome to the forum.

I think the roofs need a Saab guy with a Tech2 to set them up and make sure all the microswitches are doing what they should. There is a sticky at the top of the section with recommended service places which might help, also several members in Scotland who may be able to suggest places.
Might help if you said which town you are in or near.

If you're in the north of Scotland - try Precision Engine Services in Inverness, they have an ex-Saab tech and TECH2, or if nearer the centre of the country, try Willie Thompson at Perth SAAB

Thanks for the quick response folks. I am in Moffat, which is South West Scotland, equidistant from Carlisle and Glasgow.
I now understand there are folks in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

This one has defeated the specialists in Carlisle, who have otherwise been great. They are fully Tech 2 equipped, and indeed, it was their diagnostics that resulted in all the roof microswitches being replaced.
I don't know what 'programming' the roof means, which is what they say needs doing, unless something has got scrambled in the CIM and it all needs re-loading?
I'd love an insight into what might be the issue before going back to a garage.

When I accelerate, up pops the warning 'soft top obstructed', it goes away when I press the info button. Then comes back next time I accelerate. Ive only tried to put the roof down a couple of times, due to the weather, but each time its then says 'manual operation only'.

Is there a particular sensor, switch or stop somewhere that might cause this?

I suspect you may have tried this already if you have changed out all of the microswitches but it's worth a try, this guy had almost the same fault (same message anyway) :

https://www.saabscene.com/threads/weird-convertible-issue.190522/

I will be watching this closely as I have a convertible myself and I am sure to have similar problems at some point .... I already get some strange messages when I lower or raise the roof but generally I can get it done eventually, I don't get messages while driving though.

Good Luck
Mike

Very interesting, thanks for that, I will check out that part. Does anyone know in what order the bows are numbered?, is one at the front by the screen, or the first one along from the back window?

This is a pretty useful link I think .... it answers almost every question you can think of with regard to the 9-3 soft-top.
