I have just bought a 1 owner always garaged Saab 900i 8v hatch from 1989 (always fancied one), I would appreciate some experienced advice on the following please:

1. On needing to replace the clutch master and slave (total hydraulic failure), I have lowered the underdash and unscrewed the lower vent unit which runs right across but it won't shift. Is there a hidden screw or two at the back? I need to gain access to the peddle gubbins and the master cylinder, and don't want to force anything.

2. The ignition key won't go in the ignition lock, it is as if it is the wrong key which it is not. It was in it when I bought it, I took it out on parking without knowing there was an issue. I have engaged reverse gear I believe, but it won't release the key. The gearstick sheath won't move properly up and down the gearstick shaft either as if it is stuck, I am guessing it is related to engaging reverse.. So I am a bit stuck. Perhaps on repairing the clutch hydraulics the ignition lock will work, as the gearstick will be more free? I see I need a special screw driver to take out the gearstick/ignition lock housing, please can anyone advise what sort of screw driver I need? What is the likely repair needed? The whole thing was stripped and rebuilt according to the history, maybe 8 years ago.

Thanks in advance.

The black plastic vent has a number of screws that can be well hidden - keep searching!

The tool to remove the screws is Saab tool 8790370. I've never actually seen one of these and there aren't any on UK ebay atm.

If you can get the key out, you can look on the barrel for the number - then BillJ on here, from Saabits, can get you a proper key to match the barrel. Your key will likely be worn and one cut at Timpsons etc won't necessarily fit. That's been my experience anyway.

This thread from Saab Central might help. I have to say I wouldn't fancy dismantling the ignition bits if another solution is possible.

When I needed to remove the ignition housing I modified an old socket with a dremel, it was a bit crude, but it did the job.

The key should only come out when the stick is in reverse.

If you manage to pull the key out when the lever is not properly in reverse (easy now that everything is worn and 30+ years old) then sometimes it can block the key going in instead.

Sometimes if you push the key in and wiggle it at the same time as wiggling the stick around reverse you can get it back into sync.

If you do end up pulling the gear stick assembly out you might be able to get the lock back into sync without any serious disassembly and just some levering from underneath.

You can either customise a socket to get the special nuts out, or just hit them with a chisel and then use a pair of pointy pliers.

Thanks for the guidance. I took the key out when fully turned off, the gear stick was in neutral though and I did not know about the reverse position lock. I cannot physically push the key back in beyond a quarter way, even when wiggling the gear stick. So these security screws are going to have to come out.....

On the subject of the clutch, does anyone know the diameter of the ring wire tool I need to make for an '89 Classic 900 8v ? This is necessary so I can remove the slave.

Thanks.

Try putting the gear lever in reverse then wiggling it about whilst trying to put the key in.
If it won't go into reverse then you may have to inspect the rubber link in the mechanism or check the alignment there's a hole under the gear lever gaiter and one in the gearbox IIRC which needs to be lined up when the gear lever is in 3rd.
I'm sure someone will point you to the procedure, many versions out there eg viewtopic.php?f=2&t=17465

That is very helpful thanks. There is no 5th gear at all, it just feels like a wall trying to push the gearstick up from neutral. I thought it was because I cannot currently engage the clutch. I can select 1-4 and reverse it would seem.

PS i have already tried and tried again to insert the ignition key whilst wiggling the gearstick in reverse, no luck....
