Hmm.

A few years ago a cat adopted me. It would come and go whenever he wanted to. Sometimes, he would sit on my lap as I messed about annoying the world.

Usually he would scratch me despite being fed!

Fast forward to today. I was messing about drying the washing and painting 9-5 window wipers....

I saw a new cat trying to eat a twig. When I appeared, he didn't scarper, he just carried on trying to eat the twig. Poor basket. He/she is hungry. I will get some cat grub. I went to the shop to get some cat food for him. My thought was, when I went outside, he was too hungry to worry about me!

I am not an expert on animals, I don't mind cats. Not a fan of dogs though.

The shop is only on the corner, about a minute away.

Anyhoo, I got some packs of catfood and went home. Poor sod was waiting for me (as if it knew what my plan was) and scoffed one pack straight off the floor.

When should I feed him/her next please?

Thank you!

wait till the little furry so and so comes back asking. otherwise if you leave food out something other than your new friend will eat it or it'll go to waste

This one was a black n white one. T'other was a tabby. I think that I have seen it before around here.

I just don't want to turn into "Catman" :park:

You probably have a "Catwoman" around where you live.

40 years ago, I would have been up for it. :D These days...

I'll leave for someone else!!

I like cats, we've always had cats.

Just feed he or she when you see it wanting food :)

Take care with this Si. My cat is allergic to dairy but will gobble up any food given to her by anyone. Some dry food contains dried milk and makes her sick. Sometimes it seems that she has been given some, so we clear up the mess and get on with our lives!

Some owners don't take kindly to people feeding their cats. I don't even think about it enough to worry but some people can be more particular.

Had cats since I was wee, they are cunning buggers, even cats that are being looked after find alternates:) got 3 2 yr old tom cat bro’s and hoping they don’t start conning the neighbours! Proper thing to do if it keeps on coming would be off to vets to see if it’s chipped, but then u need proper cat box etc, less hassle chat with neighbours and see if they know the owner, if not then prob just feed it when it is about and hungry, flies love cat food so in this heat it’ll be a maggoty mess in no time if you leave it out.

This is our Cat. She is 13 now and that pic was taken the other week.

Her Sister died a couple of years back. I just came home and found her dead on the chair.
She was my Cat, she liked me best.

Took me a few hours but... we are in a bit of a hot spell, find a big bowl and leave it out full of water, there will be plenty of various wild animals needing it at the moment.

Just check around if you can to see if it belongs to anyone - Cats are notorious at making 'friends' for extra food.

Indeed, Mike - that is exactly what happened to us. We had an occasional visitor that just liked to snooze in our garden. One day, although we didn't go as far as buying cat food, we did in a moment of weakness open a tin of tuna. The result was that the occasional visits became regular, until, that is, we found out it's owner's name and arranged for it to be collected and returned home. After the third time it presumably gave up on us, as we haven't seen it since!

Now I feel guilty that I 'betrayed' it's trust and lost the pleasure of it's company!

Regards, John.

Si,
Looks like you've been adopted!!

Obviously check around and see if it's chipped as well but, if you able, take it in feed it and enjoy.
Cats are beautiful animals and the chance of having one as a companion is a gift even if it's a shared companionship!

If it was hungry it would eat anything.
My father in law is catman, always feeds the strsys and takes them in. He ended up with 5 kittens....found homes for all except one which we had, then number 1 daughter split from her partner and George lives with us too...

I guess the answer is, best intentions and all, unless it's a stray then you're probably just giving someone elses cat an extra meal. Do it regularly and it'll get fat and then will suffer from all the issues we do when we pile on the pounds. My sister was in exactly the same situation of having a cat visitor that she fed, and the cat was indeed fat, till one day it had a note on the collar saying "please stop feeding my cat". She eventually met the owner who told her the cat had three other houses it'd visit! Since then she did stop and the cat still comes round, not as often and has now gone to normal size.

Pretty sure my cat has a second home somewhere else as she's started getting heavier, maybe a note on the collar (or it could be my other half secretly giving her treats, again...)

I'm a big fan of cats. They are great. But they are notorious for visiting lots of houses.....but we wouldn't be without them....

Give mostly dry food. Water, never milk. If it keeps disappearing it is probably owned by someone quite close. Put a collar on it with a your phone number on a tag.
