If I had to do a hub nut up to 300nm (without a torque wrench), is it true to say that me (weighing 100kg) stood on the end of a 1ft bar in a horizontal position, would be pretty much spot on (or my 30kg daughter stood on the end of a 1M foot breaker)?

Sweet. Turns out my torque wrench only goes up to 250!

Yes, approximately.
100kg = 981N
@ 0.3m = 295Nm in round figures.

That sounds a tighter hub nut than a 9-5!

It's on the caravan. I don't worry TOO much on the car because the hub nut is not the only thing holding the wheel on like it is here!

Stand on it slowly and don't bounce. If you do you will double the torque.

just do it up to the german setting and you'll be fine. if not able to do that just go to the ft setting on the breaker bar instead

I do normally just do hub nuts up to "FFT" but given the consequences of messing this up I thought I'd better do it properly! Even used a new nut...

The centre of mass has to be bang on the foot mark, and the pull at 90 degrees. An inch out is quite a variation, as is 10 degrees out, and balancing will be quite hard in boots stood on top.

A polypropylene rope sling exactly one foot away, sat in a groove, and your mass directly at 90 degrees down would be accurate enough.

I test my torque wrench periodically this way.
