Saw a daft move by a truck this afternoon on the M1, 4 lane section near mansfield.

Lorry in lane 1, another wide lorry with a static caravan / temporary building overhanging it, then goes for an overtake and because of its overhanging load it has to take up lanes 2 & 3. This wide load did not have an escort vehicle like they usually have these days and was doing the usual lorry trick of both on limiters at 56mph so was basically a rolling road block for ages / miles :wall: :loco: :cen:

But surely if his limiter allows him to do 56.2 mph and the other guy’s only 56.15 mph he is in his rights to overtake?? He’s got until Leeds to pull it off!

I used to know a lorry driver and he used to say he held on until another lorry had passed his drivers side mirror.
Fair game until they pass my mirror I think he said.

It wasn't me!

It is embarassing to be overtaken by a wide load, so well worth showing thw world how well endowed you are by sticking at Vmax while traffic piles up behind you.*

* this is assuming there isn't a car sat in lane 2 at 55mph and not keeping left unless overtaking. Or worse, sitting at 50, then speeding up to 57, then slowing down again.

i had an early morning trip on the A14 / A1, where the A14 was in 3 lanes after Bar Hill there were three lorries occupying all three lanes doing very similar speeds.......I was the only car on the road at 6am, but even so....didn't think they were allowed in the outside lane?

Had this yesterday on the M90 heading north towards Perth - I was in the 95 V4 sitting at 58mph (it's happy cruising speed) behind a curtain sider for many miles from Milnathort. Top of the hill past Glenfarg, a 7.5 tonne box lorry comes past at about 60mph under the power of gravity, then at the bottom of the hill resets to 57.9mph. Chummy in the curtain sider decides to overtake, and there followed 5 miles of side by side lorry racing, with two lanes of traffic pulling up behind them.

Must admit that I was slightly irritated (on my way to a funeral didn't want to be tight for time) after a mile or so and I put my full beam on - very unlike me. Surpringly there was soon clear road.

Not allowed in the outside lane of a motorway that has more than 2 lanes. a roads is fine. Hand as I sometimes need the outside lane of the A40 to get passed slower vehicles.

What is the difference between a 70mph 3 lane A road and a motorway? Apart from you can't on a motorway!

I remember that being pretty much one of the highway code questions on my driving test. There are quite a few differences.

I think you had better have a look at The Highway Code.
As examples, you can't turn right off a Motorway but you can an A road,
All junctions on a motorway are slip roads but not on A roads

Ok I meant speedwise and three or more lanes. Should have been clearer my bad.
Why can lorries use the third lane on an a road and not on a motorway? Is it because of turn offs, which would be odd as the A14 and A1 don't have any right turns in the three or four kane sections.
Fully aware of the highway code thanks.

Just having traffic joining from the left without a slip road means that some traffic may need to move to the right to give it space, Hence HGVs might need to use lane 3 or 4. That said the A14 in particular does look and feel very much like a motorway with very few junctions. In those sections I can see no practical reason for allowing lorries to use lane 3 or 4.

I note that part of the M11 actually has a prohibition on lorries overtaking, perhaps more two lane roads should apply the same rule.

A couple of years ago I traveled to the museum festival by road. For much of Northern Europe and the parts of Scandinavia we went to HGVs were excluded from the outer lane on major roads. The drivers complied on the whole so the issue of rolling road blocks was much smaller. I think there’s a case for that rule here.

There is a section of the A34 that vehicles over 7.5T in lane 2 on a hilly section.
