Interesting to note that the 16V engine is belt-driven, rather than by chain, as was the norm with the 99 engine.

Was this easier to engineer for the small number of engines required?
Or was there another, perhaps performance-related, advantage?

DUE TO THE ADDITIONAL HEIGHT OF THE CYLINDER HEAD,IT IS LIKELY THAT A BELT WAS CHOSEN OVER AN EXTENDED CHAIN,FOR 'SPEED OF ACCESS' TO THE CYLINDER HEAD ITSELF.(MEANING THAT IT COULD BE REMOVED,WITH THE ENGINE 'IN SITU' FOR RAPID 'CYLINDER HEAD GASKET' REPLACEMENT,ETC).

THE ADDED BENEFIT ALSO,BEING LESS RECIPROCATING MASS,AND ESSENTIAL RE-DESIGN, OF THE TENSIONERS,CHAIN GUIDES,SPROCKETS ETC. ALL OF WHICH,WOULD HAVE TO HAVE BEEN CONTAINED,WITHIN A 'MODIFIED' TIMING COVER.

INDEED,ON A FEW OCCASIONS IT IS MENTIONED,THAT THE ENGINE 'DROPPED' A VALVE,WHILST IN COMPETITION,AS IT WAS OVER-REVVED...

THIS PICTURE,MAYBE ILLUSTRATES THE DRIVERS FEELING'S SOMEWHAT  MID-EVENT.....

HERE,IT WOULD SEEM THAT 'SAAB' WERE RUNNING THE 8V(LOOK CAREFULLY) STILL IN THE SILVER 'EMS',WHILST THE 'BLACK EMS' I THINK ONLY RAN THE 16V MOTOR.......

EITHER WAY,THAT LOOKS A RATHER COLD ENVIRONMENT,TO BE CARRYING OUT 'SERVICE' MID-RALLY.....

https://www.teambild.se/stock-photo/arkiv-rally-6175/

FURTHER PHOTO'S TO SUGGEST BOTH CAR'S WERE STILL BEING USED IN 1977......DRIVEN BY 'EKLUND'.

https://www.teambild.se/stock-photo/arkiv-rally-5974/

RATHER RARE ONE OF THE ACTUAL 'POLAR CARAVAN' THAT SUPPLIED 'SAAB' WITH MUCH-NEEDED SPONSORSHIP,FOR SUCH A SMALL COMPETITION OUTFIT....

'HXE 404' ONCE AGAIN,IN 1977......

The car you show there is the car Hans sylvan was codriver in , in monte carlo claasic regularity ,
These are replicas ,, i have the car that was driven 1976 in boucle de spa ,,
It is white today ,, buy it have paintspray on the hood hignes of opalgreen paint , early airholes to cool the brakes in the innerarcs ,
I have a lot of picture of the silvery/green cars ,, but i search pictures where i can locate the battery ,
In the black yellow blue the battery was placed in the trunk ,, but not in the silvery cars ,,
On the rally turbos it was placed in the engine wall on the right side again ,,
My engines are early ones with steelintake so it fit the car perfect ,
Kind regards Åke

Only some strenghtning of shockabsorbers fittings ,,
A arms ,, but no body changing , also backseat was need to be there ,
Hxe was a group2/4 car so there you could modify bodyshell with arches , change to a look alike us front lamps

HEJ,HEJ AKE....DO YOU HAVE SOME PICTURES OF YOUR CAR?

ARE YOU ASKING ABOUT THE BATTERY LOCATION,TO HAVE THE CAR AS ORIGINAL AS POSSIBLE? OR ARE YOU CONCERNED WITH WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION?

BIRDIE

P.S THE 'REPLICA EMS' PICTURES WERE ON 2010 'RALLY OF MIDNIGHT SUN'
