I'm still a bit stunned with the news, and wasn't sure whether to start this thread or not, but thought that someone ought to. Simon made me laugh a lot over the years, so I thought I would post it. The posts to the 'in memoria' thread have been numerous, heartfelt and a tribute in themselves, but how about something more tangible?

I wondered what ideas there were regarding a fitting way to pay tribute to Bonzo Dog, his contributions to this site, to Saabs and to life in general? It would have to be something that could be open to everyone, i.e., not too geography dependent.

My initial thoughts included:

- An online collection for a charity
- An annual award for the worst pun in a UK Saabs post
- An annual award for the funniest picture in a UK Saabs post
- A Saab run somewhere

What we do could be any, none or all of the above.

Thoughts?

A very touching and fitting gesture by all accounts. Hadnt had the pleasure of meeting Simon so will leave those nearer to the fella to lead the way on this one.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but I think Paul (Orca) will announce the chosen charity nearer the funeral time.

Donation from me waiting.

Dan.

I like the annual award ideas - and the run-out too :D I think Simon would approve of the run, although I didn't know him nearly well enough to judge what he'd think of awards in his name

got a feeling this will be a big queue!!

as an asides, I remember having a slightly smutty conversation with Simon at the Chipping steam fair in 2008, then once the traction engines had finished, we really lowered the tone

If I may be so bold, I would like to suggest a way to record the passing of Simon could be through the 2010 Calendar. Once the chosen charity has been decided, it could be arranged that £1 or £2 from the sale of the calendar price is included to go towards that Charity, and with permission of his family, maybe the inside cover could be the official memorium to him?

I think this is a great idea, oh, cash donation waiting here too, when the times right of course.
A UKSaab run out/rally is also a very good idea & I will attend/donate whatever plan of action is chosen.

How about changing the name of the coffee bar to something like Bonzo dogs's lounge bar in his honour. Just a thought.

I would imagine a run out around Yorkshire would go down very well, but whatever happens, count me in.

Like the idea, Graeme.

Can I suggest that on a mutually agreed date next year, meetings/events are held in Yorkshire, and all around the country by groupings, in his honour? Maybe funds could be raised in his name at such to go to the charity which is to be announced?

Just a thought.

I was thinking this for the members that won't be able to attend the WYSE meeting too.

I have known Simon from SaabCentral and have over a couple of years beome a friend. We chatted and spoke on the phone many times up until the week he went to Brum.

It is not for me to make suggestions but the idea of "Simons' Snug" or Bonzo's Private Bar" sounds fine.

SaabStudent, Graeme, I met you in Coventry and with Zaphod I think the idea of a rally/meeting in Jerkshire with stoppovers in Simons pubs, restaurants and curry houses would be a great idea and I'll really try to be there.

For the immediate questions we should await Paul, Orca.

Cheers old fruit.
David.
