What is this all about now? Still on the hunt for an ultra-cheap to run commuter car after the demise of my 1.4TDCi Fiesta. Loads of cheap and cheerful motors all over Facebook including the 3.0V6 Vectra Diesel and a 2.2 X Type but in most of the listings is the comment 'green slip only'.

Most of this has to be down to home traders flipping cars without trying to be a business but where does that leave you trying to get the car usable? How do you get a logbook without paying for it and if you do that then you get the double tax hammer applied at some point as it would be a change of owner.

Or are these cars off the auction block with suspect histories that may well come back and bite? For a car that costs £200-£500 is it really worth having history checks done on them until you find a clean one as that could end up costing as much as the car itself.

I wouldn't buy a car off a green slip only, full V5C or no sale. As you allude it's dodgy sellers flipping cars they've taken in px or swapped, usually been through loads of unscrupulous owners.

For that sort of price the bargains are few & far between, although some still expect new car quality and guarantees for that price.

You can still apply for the logbook on the green slip at no cost.

New owner is responsible for tax from the day of purchase. Likelihood is if its green slip any tax remaining is already void.

I've bought quite a few green slip cars, they've usually been passed around quite a few owners. There's a site called swapz and cars get passed round there quite a bit so end up with someone trying to offload a car with the green slip only. You can tax & register the car with the green slip though.

As a rule of thumb for me, if it's only got a green slip expect to spend quite a bit on repairs. I'd only buy one if it was the bargain of the century now.
