If anybody's still interested in this hoary old topic, I (well, my brother really) managed to sort the absent bass today with a pioneer amp and a pair of 6 x 9s in the rear seat back.
I took the feed from the amp behind the rear left interior trim panel, using T-Taps into the wires to the door speakers. Initially I had tried a line level converter but it went pop, so I tried another (an Audioleads one from Halfords) and that sounded ok but only lasted 30 mins.
Finally I bought a Pioneer GM-A3702 that has high level inputs and that's MUCH better.
I had to use 3 way speakers but only a very little mid- and high- frequency sound makes it out through the seat foam, the bass is transformed though.

Looks like a great upgrade mate. Can I ask for a bit more detail on the speakers you used, the wiring to get it all plumbed in and where did you pick up the amp? Does it screw into the area behind the seats without any modifications? Thanks.

If it ain’t broke, you haven’t tried hard enough.

"T-Taps into the wires to the door speakers" - meaning that you still have the door speakers connected to the rear amp?

The Only Way is Erik's.
