Forum rules

When you put a new thread up in the Workshop please put your car's year and model in the thread title, along with just a brief indicator of the problem.

Car Year - Car Model: Brief description of issue. EXAMPLE- 1999 9-3. Problems starting when hot.

Please also add as much information as you can about the problem, to your post.

This will help us to help you, without having to ask basic details such as what car you have.

Threads with non-compliant titles will be moved to The Pit Lane (in which no replies can be posted, but the OP can edit the thread - upon which the thread will be released to the workshop forum)

Nb. Generic thread titles for truly generic issues that genuinely are not model or variant specific (such as "how do I change the spring in an forge wastegate actuator") are acceptable

**The first 5 posts for new users require individual moderator approval (which they will only get it if they are in line the rules of the forum). Please be patient and allow time for that to happen, and avoid duplicate postings.**

As the snow season looms , my attention has gone back to my XWD woes
Currently no drive to the rear
No noises , clonks “ tightness “ when steering
No error messages
We had a tech 2 session and all the hydraulic side is functioning properly current draw of the pump , cycling as it should
When the wheels are in the air , no drive to the back and when you spin the wheels under power , the clutch temp shoots up to 300 c within seconds

I bought a esid2 and I have been monitoring the xwd clutch temp as well as the xwd oil temp
The oil temp tracks the clutch temp , in normal driving reaches a temp of 37-39 c
Now when I give it some beans , front wheels slip and the clutch temp shoots up to 100 c ish
Oil temp does not move

Been reading up on the Haldex system issues , design of the saab xwd system and formed a theory
The Saab system is different in that it has an esld and the 4wd is “ pre-engaged “ on start , the rear wheels being disengaged as the speed climbs
I my case there is zero drive to the rear at all times
The possible reasons for this could be
Mechanical failure of the clutch pack/drive shaft
Or clutch disengaged because of an issue with the haldex control system
With no errors indicated , the electronic side looks ok , the fickle finger of blame seems to rest on the clutch control solonoid
If this sticks open ( or closed) then it would open the clutch and disable the drive
The ecu would think that the clutch is closed but the system is telling it that the front wheels are slipping therefore the clutch must be slipping and generating heat , hence the high ( ghost ) clutch temperature as the clutch temp is not measured but derived by the ECU

However the solenoid does not seem to be separate or available

What next ?

Sounds logical.

I would have suggested a chat with Thorney Motorsport about parts, but I heard recently that their Haldex service and upgrade is slow because they don't do anything in-house. They just remove and replace, and send the unit to Haldex in The Netherlands for the work to be done.

Is this any help?

https://www.haldex.com/en/Europe/servic ... er-search/

Seems to be mostly their trailer stuff, but theres a 68 page price list, so there may be something!

Might be a stupid suggestion but are the fuses fine? Dont know about the gm haldex setup but some of the audi people had a similar issue and one of the fuses stopped the rear drive working, read quite a bit not long ago as was looking at an s3 or golf r

I did consider it but the provenance was not the best and a £700 gamble was a bit rich

Might be worth a call to Jon at West Mids Saab Specialists in Birmingham. He has two units in stock as spares. I was talking Turbo X with him back in May time, he went through the usual failures and stated he had these spares ready.
Don’t deal with the usual staff, ask for Jon (welsh fella), he’s the only one who knows his stuff.
