Any techies on here who could suggest the best way of getting the wifi from the house down to the end of the garden?

As long as you don't mind mounting on the wall outside look at a UniFi Outdoor AP. These are designed to be outdoors, you'll just need to run a ethernet cable to it from your router

Directional aerial from the router pointing down the garden from the router might be enough to do what you want.

I have an office at the end of my garden. Admittedly, it's not very long but it was too far for home WiFi by a long way.

Our solution is an ethernet cable to the office and then a router plugged into that to act as an access point (needs a little fiddling with settings, there are good online guides).

I have a Tp Link Archer C7 in the house connected to a Tp Link Archer C2 in the office. It all works well.

Powerline boxes were my initial temporary solution, they were poo. The IT manager at work suggested that something plugged in somewhere was a bit cheap and nasty and introduced interference. Seems logical, lots of my stuff is cheap!

I tried the over mains internet but it was too unreliable.
So I ran an ethernet cable along fences, through hedges and stables to the end point. All 50 metres of it.
Then got an access point of eBay, job's a good un.
It was a bit of a ball ache, but it seems to run OK.

Ethernet cable is the most reliable way to go if its feasible.

Asus ac88u is a good long range wifi router.
Depends on how far are you talking about.

If you wanting to get Internet down to the end of the garden, then a link using Ubiquiti Nanostations is one way to do it.
They are £65 each and you will need 2 when creating a link. They for for 7 miles, so a garden is no issue.
If you just want to give Wifi coverage on the garden area, then upgrade your house wifi. A Ubiquiti UniFi LR gives 300ft radius coverage which is more than enough to cover most houses and the entire garden as well. Again approx £65 per unit.

Cable may be easy to run but if getting someone to do it then there is call out etc to consider. I only got mine as it was part of the electrical hook up package with our garden office so the extra was similar to Paul's costing.

I run ethernet over the power cable to my garage, however I then connect an airport express to this (via a cable) and use it as a set of remote speakers. I.e., there is no WiFi coverage in the garage ... if you need that, an uprated AP like Paul and others have mentioned is probably better - I guess it also depends on how many other WiFi networks there are in your immediate area, as essentially it's a case of first-come, first-served and also who shouts the loudest! Hence why the LR (Long Range) Ubiquiti ones would be better, because they (effectively) shout louder than standard routers ... thereby blocking out their signal in your area, however if your area is densely populated with other WiFi networks, you could end up affecting their reception too ...
