The D5 (2.4) is quite a nice engine for a diesel. My Dad has an XC70 AWD with the D5, and it's a great car for the big old cumbersome lump that it is (compared to my 9-5). If I was to need the frugality of a diesel (although, the XC70 isn't that, when you push it

), I'd choose a D5 2.4 Volvo over any other offerings.

I know some like, or even prefer, diesel, but doesn't that last statement pretty much apply to virtually all diesels? They can have as much torque as you like, and the 5+ cylinder ones can be pretty smooth, but they never seem to be able to deliver outright fun or character like a petrol can, for example an Aero. And with the mpg sacrifice you pay for 5+ cylinders, they're often not that much better on juice than a good 4-pot Turbo petrol.
It's a dilemma I faced and ended up with a Dame TiD auto, but now I've had enough of the boredom and want to move it on again, as nice and comfortable as it is. The Dame gets about 44mpg from my daily commute. I'm interested in BMWs 3 litre big 6 variety of diesel and the 2.4 litre offerings from Volvo and Alfa, but when I think of the drop in mpg from the Dame, I think I may as well drop a little more to an Aero. Our 9k Aeroversary gets 35+mpg from the same commute even in stage 3 form, although granted you have to allow greater variance if you get stuck in major jams. And granted a 9000 is getting on a bit and owning one these days isn't always quite as 'jump in and drive' as something more modern.
Back on topic, I like Volvo's. Haven't owned one yet but would be more than open to one of any age, with the right engine.
