Car Model: 2001,93,95 turbo
I have a good 2000/2001 model 9-3 with a greasy filthy B204 turbo engine,,,motor seems ok buy sludgey, and i have been offered a near new B205 turbo motor with low KMS ,, complete including turbo, starter, alternator etc,,,will it be a regular brop in swap,,,i understand i will be using my red top ignition cartridge from the B204 motor and i may need to swap the injectors over, from the 204 to the new 205 motor,,, what else will be needed to put the newer engine in,
the B205 motor is from a 2001 model 9-3 convertible..

the turbo apparently is also different,, can you guys help me,, im in australia and mainly play around with old V8 carby cars..

Hi steve,

someone with more knowledge may be able to fill the holes in my knowlege but, yes it is possible, but there may need to be some switching over of parts between engines as the 205 is Trionic 7 management and the 204 is trionic 5.. for starters the throttle body is different between both so you'll have to use the TB and inlet off your 204, as you said you will need to use your original injectors, DI cassette etc and I'm not sure if other things like the crank position sensor etc are different, but to be safe I'd swap all sensors/senders over, essentially only using the 205 engine with all T5 ancilliaries

the T7 and T5 use different APC valves so you'd need to make sure you kept your original (assuming it's not an LPT which dont have them anyway) or have your ECU mapped and converted to run a T7 APC valve (search on the forum about this)

the turbo on the T5 engines is a Garrett T25, the turbo on all 93 205 motors other than the aero motor is a T25, the aero having a TD04.. if the new engine came out of a 9-5 then it will likely have a GT17 turbo. if you've got a TD04 then that's a good thing.

hope this helps a little

I've just done this the other way around due to the B204 being a stronger engine i.e. i've dumped a sludged B205 and put a B204 into a 2001 9-3 (which should have the 205). I had to keep the B205 cylinder head because of the (IIRC) coolant connections being different and the DI issue. You also have to swap the CPS to keep the original.

Hmmm...........interesting one this, the b204 doesn't usually sludge - more often it's the b205 thats full of tar and bits of breather hose. Yours must have been abused or unloved and fed on mineral/semi-synth oil.
How bad is the b204? Is it terminal? Got any knocking from the big ends?
It might be worth dropping the sump on the b204, giving it a good clean then putting it all back together with fully synth replaced every 3,000 for a couple of changes. As per the posts above it would be possible to swap over to the b205 block, but it's a lot of work and the internals are weaker - probably still strong enough for what you'd want in a vert though.

As to the outside of the engine - there's quite a few threads dotted around here with owners who have shinyitis and magpie tendancies.......more than enough tips to clean up the engine quite easily if you've the elbow grease :D
