I have been asked to do solos with Meva Choir for awhile now, while last night at practice I finally agreed a date for my first one. So I have got till June the 9th to sweat and chew my fingers to the bone.
I shouldn't be like it but at the moments I have butterflies the size of Pterodactyls. :argh:
I now it doesn't sound that bad but it is a big thing for me, Meva are one of the top Cornish Choirs and to solo for them is an honour, and did I mention terrifying.

Oh and the song 'Ol Man River' river from Showboat, so no pressure there then :bag:

I have a few weeks to practice, in fact I'm off out to practice with an accompanist this afternoon. I will be channeling Paul Robeson for a few weeks. 8)

You,ll be fine....my daughter is a performer and she craps herself every time......but she knows she will be fine once she starts....l think not being nervous would be a bigger concern.....enjoy the moment ...bet you,ll want to do it again once it's over in a flash..good luck

Nice one Paulo, the 1st 15/30 seconds are the worst, I quiver like a c r appping dog I do! I'm terrible.

You'll be fine once you start...not really though.

Cheers Rob and everyone thanks for the support, I'm sure I will be ok I am just having a pre match wobble.
I'm normally not to bad now with concert solos, and I'm fine in the pub afterwards. Its just that Meva is a big and talented choir and I really need to get it right in front of all of them. Its a bit of a step up from the solos I do in the smaller group I am in, plus 'Ol Man River' is quite a vocally demanding piece and the modern standard by which Basses in my pier group are judged. Mind you being a Soloist with Meva Choir has quite a bit of kudos in the singing circles I am in so it will be worth it in the end. :argh: :bag:

Also I had these comments from some of my mates in Meva choir and that has boosted my confidence a bit.

Quote:
Alan Dibb, You have a very strong bass voice, and you sing that song beautifully. I am already looking forward to hearing you sing it with the choir

Bill Collins, You'll be fine. No one else in the choir could sing it half as well.

Andy Gill, Go for it mate!!

have the same confidence in your voice that the other choristors have, you'll lap it up

Well I did the Solo last night in a huge chapel and it went pretty well or so I was told. I was a bit nervous for the first couple of lines but when I opened up and relaxed it all fell into place. I think all the practice I did obviously paid off as I am sure I sung it on auto pilot. :D
I did a sort of warm up gig for a Jubilee party in Mevagissey in the Jubilee hall of all places and that helped build my confidence last Tuesday. Bit husky in the voice department today though but I think that was more down to the afterglow in the pub.
I was really chuffed that my Billie was there to see me do it.

One thing I will always remember from last night was that the concert organisers had booked a female soprano to sing a couple of solos as well. She was supposed to have been trained at the Royal College of Music, I think she may have been a little economical with the truth on that front. I have never heard anything like it in my life. Her piano playing reminded me of Les Dawson. One of her pieces was Gershwins' Summer Time from Porgy and Bess and I am sure if you have heard that you will know how badly wrong it can go and it did.
