My original Saab radio has packed up, so I have bought a new one to replace it (generic, not Saab)

I have removed the Saab radio but I cannot see how to remove the 'carrier' part. It is solidly affixed somehow, but I can't fathom how to get it out... any ideas guys?

Park it in Sunderland....

Seriously, is it the little cage thing?, what you need to do is bend the tangs back.

When the cage is fitted there are a series of triangular tangs that get folded back so they snag on the plastic of the facia. These need to be bent back towards the centre of the cage. when you have done all of them it should slide out.

Your new one should be the same so look at the fitting instructions for the tangs in the cage and reverse the process.

I have looked at the 'cage' & I can see the tabs.... but none appear to have been bent back!

There is no movement at all in it, really solid. could it possibly be bolted/screwed from the rear or something similar?

i took my 1993 9000 audio series radio out
the cage has the two little tabs one each side that you pull up to remove the stereo unit
i replaced it with an much newer alpine unit that has exactly the same fitting so if yours is the same type
if you fit an alpine it goes strsaight in the old cage as mine did
i am sure theres loads of differrent manufacturers that use this same generic not saab specific type cage
maybe put a piccy of your cage up and peeps will advise matey

the saab radio is a Clarion.... at the back of the cage there is a multi connector that marries up to the connector on the LH rear of the radio. It is not possible to re-use this cage. I have taken another look but I cannot see any tabs at all, it really is in solid, there is not even any movement if I try to prise the edge with a screwdriver.

If i get chance I will take a pic & post it here.

How difficlt can it be?.... I suspect a thief would have it out in a jiffy!

Does the old radio work or do you want it? If not, fire up the angle grinder.

Well, as your radio is dead, the method I find that works really quite well in these situations is to get my hands in behind the unit and wrestle with the sodding thing as hard as you like until it just pops out into fresh air.

I'm not joking, by the way, I've found this to be a really good method for getting the things out, as I too can never sort out those tang/tab things. It just means that your new radio will go in the cage already there, but it may, I say MAY, rattle a bit. Or not.

Usual caveats apply to this information; you break it, that'll teach you to listen to someone as stupid as me.

Tony, also high risk of cutting your fingers, but in principle....

Maybe, but time and practice on my heap has taught me I WILL shed blood at some point anyway, so regard this as normal operating procedure.

However, what I forgot to mention is the following:

1 - locate heated seat switches
2 - underneath is blank switch, next to angry bee
3 - remove blank switch
4 - hook longest finger you have in the hole created and push ACC unit out
5 - unplug ACC unit
6 - you now have more room in which to remove radio

The preceeding assumes that the radio is directly underneath ACC unit. If for any reason some fool has put the ashtray there and the radio underneath that, then prepare for a proper world of pain...

Good news!... and bad!...

I have succeeded in removing the radio cage now.... I removed the ashtray unit that is fitted above (another pain, but managed to prise it out with a struggle and sore fingers!

This enabled me to get my hand in to grasp the cage at the rear. I wedged a screwdriver in around the front edge of the cage top and bottom middle... and pulled hard... hey presto!

The bad news is that the connectors on the Saab radio are not the same as those on the new unit, so not as simple an install as I had expected.

The new radio came with 2 plugs with flying leads attached, but the colour coding of the wires are different, so I don't know which wires to splice where.

does anyone have a wiring diagram for the radio connector plug so I can determine which wires go where?

I have photo's of both plugs, but I don't know how to post them on here.

I'm not certain if your vintage of car already has all the ISO plugs, but have a look at the following thread, it covers most of the different plug shenanigans that go on.

viewtopic.php?f=4&t=74301&hilit=+radio

I also assume your radio looks like this:

with an amp under the drivers' seat, and not this:

as I haven't a clue how this ancient thing wires up.

my radio is neither of those... similar to the second one though.

There IS a silver box under the passenger seat (my car is LHD) which I assume is an amp?
there is a part number of 40 83 051 printed on it.

can you tell me how I can put photo's in my post, it will make things a lot clearer as to what I have got.

That part number 40 83 051 comes up as an Amplifier.

For pictures start a free account at either Flickr or photobucket and load them on there then post the links in here.

Just found this topic that should explain how to post pictures viewtopic.php?f=6&t=25623

Below pic : the round connector with the most pins was not connected to anything it was plugged up with a rubber bung ... Possibly for connection to a CD player if fitted?

The other round connector I presume is for a cd multichanger??? as I recall seeing a similar one in the LHS boot trim when I wired up the tow bar

Not sure if this will help it's from the 1995 model, but it could be a place to start
