EXAMPLE- [Car Year][Car Model]: [Brief description of issue]

When you put a new thread up in the Workshop please put your car's year and model in the title, along with just a brief indicator of the problem.

Please also add as much information as you can about the problem, to your post.

This will help us to help you, without having to ask basic details such as what car you have.

ive had my 07 93 anniversary for 6 months now, swapped from a V50. thought at the time that id made the right decision.
not being a fast driver (more like a grandad really), i never really pushed the saab at all. Went to overtake the other day and.... blugh.. no power at all. EML came up and limp mode kicked in.
Local RAC man (very nice man) checked on his pluggy in thingy, showed up 2 codes, checked around engine and reset. all sweet for a month :)
Doh, light back on a limp mode kicked in again. Took car to Garage who have looked after my car for years. "Prognosis was EGR, tried to clean but  , manifolds clogged, and on and on and on.
3 weeks down the line, still no worky properly. Its had a new EGR, a new manifold, a new DPF and now theyve got to send to SAAB ipswich as they are at a loss.
without swearing, im gutted. havent had bill yet, but im sitting down in anticipation.
at wits end. :argh: :argh: :argh:

Welcome!

It sounds as if you are suffering from the modern diesel woes due to not being a motorway racer. But you've replaced the three common faulty parts. Does your local man have the right Saab diagnostic computer to reset and marry all the new bits?

The garage didnt have the saab diagnostics but did take it to the local GM garage. With plenty of new parts i do hope its just a case of (as you mentioned), marrying them all together?????

Hi. Saab re married everything, purred like a kitten, upon driving back to base, put foot down and blur.
Limp mode again. (only on puttng foot down did it go wrong).

Saab are stating loss of boost pressure so its currently having all pipes tested. Intercooler rad tested and all in order so,...... Hopeful (as ever) its going to be a split pipe somewhere and that will be it.........
Forever hopeful but losing faith quickly.
Dare not ask bill as yet,

Let me know the outcome both costs and what was actually wrong...

once again what was the milage out of curiosity.

£1998.00 quid in total. Drives like an absolute dream. Could say like a new car (practically is one).

Just keep caning the car on a regular basis, you'll love it. And please don't think for one moment BMW don't have the same issues with their oil burners.... (They just cost more to fix...)

Agreed! Changing to a BMW (or another marque) may not be the solution because a similar problem may occur at a later date. This is not a problem limited to SAAB so much as many -if not all diesels- manufactured after 2009.

Diesel Particulate Filters are unsuitable for vehicles that are used for short runs at low speeds because the filters do not regenerate. Put quite simply, a :cen: good run out at speed is required at least once a week for burn off type DPFs but some use an additive (£50 a litre for the Citroen C8! :argh: h£Ll, that's more than some cask strength single malts!)

If the engines don't get a good work out on a regular basis, they literally choke to death with sooty carbon deposits. In effect then, for all the recent advances in diesel engine technology, emission control systems lag behind - it's very much smoke (no pun intended) and mirrors.

I take a little piece of mind from what you are saying above Roger W.

I have had my car since July and I have had a new battery, EGR valve, water pump and timing belt and a new wing mirror. I was getting to the point where I had zero confidence in the car and after reads of this forum, was pretty paranoid about the diesel engine and all that goes with it.

However, that said, as well as the unavoidable short runs to tesco etc, my car gets a good battering up the bypass 5 days per week so I am pleased that I have read your post :)

Is there a rule of thumb on what kick starts a regeneration programme?

I live smackbang on A11 so going on a good run is always possible?
Speed distance revs or signs of this generation is?????

One of the parts of the Workshop system that is often overlooked covers an overview of the vehicle subsystems. I find it very helpful when tracing faults to make sure I have a very thorough understanding of how the problem part/system is supposed to work but most vehicle handbooks will not cover this, presumably taking the view that on a 'need to know basis' most owners would be bored to tears!

Reproduced below is a screen capture* from WIS that should prove illuminating but feel free to drop me a PM should you need to know more.

*The 'diagnostic tool' referred to for manual regeneration is a Tech 2
