I would suggest you can't have one without the other however there is a huge difference between lateral grip and ability to put power down. A decent rwd chassis seems to be preferred for instance, for smooth circuit racing, 4wd dulling the minutiae of information a really good driver needs whilst adding weight, off road, rallying etc obviously traction is hugely important. One can infer to the more mortal amongst us, myself included, 4wd in a supple chassis would be a huge boon in most conditions and flatter our collective hamfistery!!

I think that the difference is felt on slippery surfaces when 4wd gods sometimes confuse the two when it comes to stopping, having been so surefooted when going, iyswim!

Forester gave such bad mpg he got rid after a few months.

"Why do......". Probably for the same reason that they pronounce the restaurant chain Prezzo rather than the correct pretzo. 'cos they don't know how to.
