YIKES! Sticking the front end and roof onto a sound 96 V4 donor car could be the way to go. It has been done very successfully before. Trouble is that was 20 years ago, finding a sound V4 is getting tricky, especially one that could be saved as a V4, what am I waffling on about, I will shut up now. Good luck 8) True Grit

If going the V4 shell route, ideally you'd need to find an earlier one, so you still have the smaller windscreen.

The '67 96 had the same shell (the front and rear screen were enlarged from '68 onwards) as the two-stroke 96, albeit with a longer 'nose' to accommodate the V4.

But as Zagato says, you could start with a (solid) V4 shell and transfer the roof and front end from your shell. That's still a LOT of work but would obviously save you time having to fix all the floors etc. of your shell.

Finding a solid shell will be your next problem though - I can't imagine you'd find one that didn't need SOME welding to make good.

Found a shell for you - BUT it's in Sweden (about 1400 miles from Calais), but would fit in the back of a large van!

https://www.tradera.com/item/100116/371 ... 96-tvatakt

No bids so far and currently £560.00 - personally I would want to see a LOT more photos first! It looks like the buyer gets first dibs on all the parts too...

From the description...
1962 96 Saab body
blasted and rusted body.
the new rear axle is now fitted with new rear shock absorbers
as well as speckled and fully grounded body and painted engine room black!
The above is included in the advertisement and below, any buyer gets priority on.
Buyers of bodywork are of course given priority to all the parts that are available to ... blah a whole and nice decor..red / gray
newly renovated engine..Renovated-crankshaft / drilled 1ÖD lacquered blue ... complete with intake and carburetor
new 2 "exhaust
mkt new things ... brake cylinder / cooler / lots of different parts from the SAAB club ..
boxes etc.
freshly painted rims / blasted-silver
various red boring moldings (not complete)
Shock absorber new
renovated heating tap
the car was complete when it was taken apart.
screens doors and shutters are available but are not in good condition.!
Shipping can be arranged.

Here's another one for you - again in Sweden, but unfortunately there's no telling what state the floor etc. is in, from these photos...

Thanks for the help folks,
having looked at it quite hard I've decided I'm going to at least try and save the original shell, if I fail I lose a few hundred pounds but I'm bound to learn something along the way!
I'm still slowly dissecting the car, trying to save every fixing etc so it's taking a wee while :D

Not sure if this will make you feel better about yours, but here is a similar car in a possibly slightly worse state...

https://saabklubben.se/forum/amne/saab- ... m-skrotas/

They seem to have covered the panels in a material which has absorbed/trapped water, resulting in the panels disintegrating over time!

Crikey, how did I not see this little beauty before now? That's a helluva rusty, but two strokes are getting so rare it's definitely worth saving. Lots of work though...

Hello folks! The project is at a bit of a halt, it needs quite a lot of metal really, and I’ve been quietly on the lookout for a later shell to cut some bits out of to use as repair panels but nothing has come up.
It’s not forgotten, I will get to it sometime! Also saving up to get the engine done up :D

Ian
I know someone in Fife who has a couple of 95 shells, though they are in a poor state.
They are later V4 cars with the larger windscreen, and rear screen.
You might be able to salvage something from them.

I could put you in touch with him, if you want.

I've thrown away far better cars than this! Not for a few years mind...

Massive respect to Ian for being willing to tackle it.

Sorry it’s taken me a while to see and reply to this, I’ve been absorbed in 99 stuff!
I’d still be keen on sections or a shell to cut up if anyone has anything, although it may be butchery I’d rather put Swedish bits into it instead of home made if possible :D

So, this lovely little 2 stroke has sat in pieces the last while in my shed, and with a possible house move on the horizon and other "easier" projects having skipped the queue I decided to roll it out and reassemble it whilst I still knew where everything went, better than moving it in pieces and stuff getting lost. fortunately I'd labelled everything up and with the exception of the tail lights, bumpers, and exhaust, everything that came on it is now back on it.

I've a healthy dose of floor panels and enough wings to make a car out of it, needs a good few inner wing parts too, it isn't impossible but I sense that it's time isn't now, it'll be dry stored, and it's costing nothing to keep it

After this got assembled I took a moment of madness and advertised it for sale, now sold awaiting collection.
I have every faith this car has found the right man and I'll leave it up to him whether he wants to make himself known.
Right, back to my 99s.
