Slow progress this weekend, a good dose of man flu has kept the pace low!

Rear suspension had to go back on. both trailing arms were rotten, I had one new one but managed to track down a powder coated pair from a nice chap on here, thanks again!
ImageUntitled by ianlaw99, on Flickr

so the rest of it got de-rusted, dismantled, cleaned, painted, bearings repacked
ImageUntitled by ianlaw99, on Flickr

and fitted. Grease everywhere!
ImageUntitled by ianlaw99, on Flickr

got lots of little jobs to do, and the front hubs to go through and fit but it really is getting there!

It’s an old blacksmiths workshop! Anvil is compulsory :D shame the forge is gone though!

On another note, I think the fuel pump needs some love but I gave it a direct supply and it burst into life! Delighted!

Hi Ian
How did you clean up the back axle? Wire wheel in angle grinder ? It's great to see this car being saved.
Great work !! :corn:

Thanks! I feel like it’s nearing the end, it might get painted if I ever sort the doors though!

I used a sharp, rough flat file to knock off the flakes, then the steel brush on the grinder. To be fair I’ve seen much newer ones a lot more pitted.
It’s strange some of the body was so rotten, yet almost every brake pipe is perfect, the backing plates are all ok..
Slightly nervous that March is nearly done and the car isn’t!

Been gathering up more bits to fit to the 99, even on this old photo I found online it had a broken rear mudflap!

A few years ago Hagstrom Saab very generously gave my Dad these, they're New old stock and I knew I'd eventually build a car around them!

They look familiar :D

I passed a large amount of early 99 stuff over to Tommy as part of a deal on a T16S in about 2005.

The car I picked up the spares with was a very early 1709cc 99, other than that I would not be able to say for definite.

Ian, this is a fantastic thread (I've only just seen it). I'm so impressed with your skill set but more than (even) that, your unstoppable enthusiasm following your decision to get this sorted.

TBH, the first couple of pics after you collected it made me think it would end up being either split or used as a donor for another project.

Thanks for sharing your progress and all the great pics (you can never have too many).

I'll be following the closing stages of this thread (you seem so close, or have certainly made stellar progress).

The above comment is just one of many nice things folk have said on here and it has spurred me on. Thanks again everyone who's taken the time to come on this journey with me!

I always said I'd have this car on the road in March, and after a family wedding on Saturday I came out on Sunday afternoon and was beyond useless! Even with the right tool(thanks Dave!) I spent a few hours yesterday wrestling with one front spring and eventually got it in then called it a day!
So it's the first of April and it wasn't on the road.

I got up this morning and put the second spring in in less than 10 minutes, the genuine tool turning a nightmare job into a joy. I then went and insured the car, meaning I had to crack on, I'm just away to tax it and there's lots of bits still to fit but IT DRIVES!!!!
I'm going to tidy the shed before it gets any more done but I'm just so delighted to have driven it!
Ps, the soccerballs are still awaiting their tyres so it's sitting like this for now :D the springs look like they'll need to settle a bit!

Nice one Ian, well done :D

Do not go too OTT with the paint, looks just about right as it is 8)

Don't worry Mal, it's only getting painted where it really needs it, and it's definitely not getting polished!

In for some fine tuning
ImageUntitled by ianlaw99, on Flickr

it generally seems quite sound, drives well, pulls strongly!
