If possible I would like to ask you to host your images/photos with outside websites such as Photobucket, Saabphotos.com etc and then link them to the forum. They are free and easy to use.

Here is a quick guide of how to do this:

First of all your image should be hosted on the Internet somewhere. Websites like SaabPhotos provide a very good easy to use service. However, unfortunately you will need an account but its free.

Once you have uploaded the image right click on it and select 'properties', copy the 'properties' URL address which should look something like this:

Code:
http://www.saabphotos.com/gallery/albums/album321/naranja.sized.jpg

Next, you have to place your image into a post, so click the 'IMG' code button at the top of the new topic page and paste in the URL from the image. It will look like this:

Code:
[img]http://www.saabphotos.com/gallery/albums/album321/naranja.sized.jpg[/img]

...But will appear in your text when you post the topic, like this:
Image

Basically, as long as the Internet 'address' of your image is surrounded by these tags you'll be ok.

Code:
[IMG](ADDRESS GOES HERE)[/IMG]

However, just remember to try not to post-up massive images in terms of size, as this will slow the whole forum down and mess up the format.
Remember that some people are using a 56k dial-up connections and will have to wait ages for an image to load!

Thanks

Can someone tell me why this Board Attachment Quota is happening.
I tried to send a PM a couple of weeks ago with a pic attached but it kept getting block/stopped, whatever.
The PM i sent to Tech2 asking for help/info, so far remains unanswered.

The board will have xxxMb of storage available too it as part of the service that has been paid for.

When people attach pics it eats into that quota until there is none left.

At which point the owners can buy more space, or remove old pics.

This is for attached pics....

Link to pics do not use storage quota.

To explain the process, you go to the website, log in, click upload- browse to the photo, and click upload. It automatically resizes it, and then gives you a series of links- if you click the "IMG" one then it automatically copies it. Paste that into your post and you're done. It really is easy. Looks better too.

Ian C has pointed out on another thread the size issue of 1024 x 768, so here goes for resizing.....

I'm going to sticky this in the announcements/suggestions section, so everyone can benefit from Shalien's kind efforts.

I am trying to add a photo to a post on the Workshop section but I cant.
Last night it said the file was too big so today I retook the photo on my phone with a much lower resolution.
Now it says its the wrong size border.
People post hundreds of pictures. What is the secret?

Try photobucket. I use it and it works fine.

host the image on a photo site, such as photobucket, then copy the link for the image on to this forum

Or if you want to add it as an attachment and the file is too big, you can re-size the pic using 'Paint'. Click 'Resize/Skew' In the 'Image' menu. Remember to re-size horizontal and vertical equally.

I am a mod on another Saab forum, just a case of clicking a button and uploading pictures....why is it photobucket etc on here....?

The amount of times I have done something to my car and thought I will post a picture but then thought no that will mean uploading, loading the laptop up, copying and pasting etc, then think I won't bother.

Lots of people complain about this but nothing has been done

Photobucket means it is stored on their servers not on the ones hosted here.

This saves on hosting costs in two ways, firstly in storage but also in the bandwidth as the browser is redirected to photobucket or wherever the picture is hosted from.

There are two answers to this one.

The first answer is you can attach photographs on here, providing they are not too big! When you write a post, before you hit submit, look down the options and you will see "attach file" which is where you can add up to 3 photos per post. The main restriction is size, and the limit is set fairly small (although plenty big enough to post a 7x5 photo as an attachment) and there is a restriction on type (although jpg is fine which is the most common). The reason for this is I am sure you are aware being a moderator, bandwidth is expensive. Allowing unrestricted photograph size would be prohibitively expensive. As it is UKS costs several thousand a year, by using photobucket etc means we use their bandwidth which obviously does not cost us anything. :D

The second answer is - that is why nothing has been done, nothing needs doing!

Only just started the other forum Nick so no nothing about it that's James side, but I am sure he's not paying for the picture thing, you can upload instantly off your phone and to be fair you could on the 306 site I joined in 2010 when I had one and vpcuk...

The reason you cannot upload direct from the phone is as above, they will be too large. As said, with a forum with the traffic of UKS it could be 10s of thousands a year for bandwidth, the same reason Pistonheads does not allow any attachments despite being part of a multi-national media group with the pockets that go with it.

Indeed, but the only options are to charge for the forum or smother it in adverts. When UKS started the bandwidth was free due to size, as I said in the other thread, it is now several k a year. That could easily be multiplied by a factor of 10 or so as photos take much more than text.

I use photo bucket and get on well with it, if you're not getting it to work give me a message on here or a call on 07747033655. It took me a while to figure it, I can be a bit simple with computers but I have it now :-)
