Hello.
Why does my PM OUTBOX indicate ">> outbox (3)" after I think I have sent ALL my PM messages?
Have these (3) been sent or not?
Am I doing something wrong?
What do I need to do to make it show ">> outbox (0)" ?
Thanks,
Dave Smith.

It means they haven't been read by the recipient.

As said above, when you send a pm it goes to your outbox, when it is read by the recipient it moves to the sent folder.

A useful way to see if your messages have been read.

And it gives you the chance to call them back and edit them while they are in the Outbox.

Thanks. In which case how about naming the OUTBOX as UNRECEIVED which might be a more accurate description? They have been sent and so are not in an OUTBOX in the sense to which we have become accustomed in say the likes of Microsoft Outlook - but they have not been opened by the recipient and so can be classed as unreceived. UNREAD might suggest that these are messages that we have not read, which is not the case.
Regards, Dave Smith.

We cannot rename it as it is part of the forum software

How about asking the software guys to rename it then? It is our website and not the software guys so surely they only do what we want to make our website to our liking?

Dave Smith.

Not going to happen I am afraid, it is standard PHP software that we do not pay to use, so it is what it is. We could of course pay for custom software but we have enough expense with the hosting costing over 1500 quid a year.

Retaining it as the ''Outbox'' makes more sense to me.

Outbox = Awaiting recipient to open.

Sent = Opened by recipient.

Renaming it ''Unreceived'' will just result in more people asking, why their message is marked as unreceived and why?

Well I disagree!
Most of us use Outlook to send messages. An Outlook messsage stays in our OUTBOX folder until it has been SENT when it then goes into our SENT folder. Sending doesn't mean the recipient has opened and read the message - they could have died since the last message was opened!
How on earth you define SENT as OPENED I do not understand. If I send you a letter I don't assume it means that you have opened it - even though I have sent it recorded delivery and you have signed for it.
If you don't think UNRECEIVED is a more sensible designation, how about SENT BUT UNOPENED? That is then obvious that it has left me, been received at the destination but not yet opened (because of death, still on holiday or similar reason!).
I can't help noticing that I am not the first person to have made the observation of having messages that have been SENT but are still in their OUTBOX.
Perhaps others who see the merits of my suggestion might say so?
If the real reason it cannot be changed is financial, as suggested by TFatC, then that is a different reason.
In which case an explanation somewhere for the unusual meaning of SENT might be beneficial. I can't recall seeing anything unless it is contained in some small print somewhere?
Thanks for your time and explanation.
Regards and best,
Dave Smith.

I never mentioned READ, I stated OPENED!

Your right just because your message has been opened it does not mean its been read.
Even if opened and read some may just choose to ignore you, it might be that they have noticed your message and still chose to ignore it and not open it once they see who its from. But in the latter case it has been received rather than unreceived.

A simpler to understand system would obviously have been.

Sent - (Unopened) - currently Outbox.
Sent - (Opened) - currently Sent.

But as has been stated, the current message naming system is written into the software so we are stuck with it.

Plus the ''vast'' majority of users are familiar with this setup as its been in place since the forum started, hence the responses from others beside the Admin team.

Yes the occasional new or infrequent user asks the same question as yourself, hence the sticky in Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ).
