A simple 'thumbs up' button (as used on Proboards), just so you can say you like the post without having to type a response?

Sorry, I hit the dislike button.

But there would have to be one of those too, no?

Worked well on BMWEnthusiasts that I used to frequent.

It does, but doesn't actually do anything from what I can see.

Think we have enough "likes" and "thumbs up" in the world of (anti) social media. Some of us don't like all that guff. Let a forum be a forum and Facebook be Facebook. IMO.

The thing about a like button is that it lets the OP know folk are reading their posts without needing the reader to write a post.. usually an emoticon or disposable 'well done' comment (or similar) - if at all.
Doesn't negatively affect the forums status (as a forum) in the slightest.

I like the idea too - for the reason above. I like to be able to appreciate posts without clogging up the thread posting a reply...

I'd hit the 'Like' to that reply instead of having to type this and show on the forum as a new reply which has no real content but I can't. ;-)

Gotta be a good idea for the reasons already mentioned. I can't really think of a reason not to do it unless there is a technical/cost issue that would make it prohibitive.
