BONZO PLEASE,YOU ARE LETTING THE THREAD DESCEND INTO THE DEPTHS OF MAX POWER MAGAZINE........

ALTHOUGH I MUST ADMIT,IT IS RATHER A REFRESHING SIGHT,WHEN ALL YOU ARE USED TO........ IS PISTONS,MACPHERSON STRUTS AND AIRBAGS ALL DAY!!!!

HOWEVER,IN MY ABSENCE........I HAVE BEEN VISITING A NUMBER OF FELLOW SAAB ASSOCIATES......

FIRST UP,CALLED IN TO SEE MY MATE JOHN.........HE IS NOW IN THE GYM EVERY DAY,TO BUILD UP HIS UPPER BODY STRENGTH,SO HE CAN TRY TO WALK AGAIN........
FLIPPING THRU SOME PHOTOS,OF MANY YEARS AGO,WHEN HE WAS RALLYING THE V4......... DO NOT ADJUST YOUR SET,YES IT IS PINK!
THIS ONE IS IN THE LAKES,BASSENTHWAITE LAKE LIES BEHIND THE TREES....

SPEAKING OF THE LAKES,I UNEXPECTEDLY GOT SATURDAY OFF,FROM WORK.......CAN'T WASTE THE DAY THEN?

SO FUELLED UP THE TURBO,SET OFF TOWARD CONISTON AT 7AM.....BIT OF BREAKFAST,THEN THE JOHN RUSKIN/DONALD CAMPBELL MUSUEM......BEFORE HEADING UP TO COCKERMOUTH FOR ''A BIT OF A SAAB DO''.........AND A FEW HOURS OF TALKING SAAB DRIVEL :bag:

SAT IN THE CAR,EARLY MORNING ..........COLD ENGINE BURBLING AWAY......
TRYING TO TUNE IN RADIO 2,IN THE SHADOW OF CONISTON OLD MAN.......

''YOU GOT A B20 IN THAT.....?''
CAME THE QUESTION FROM A MIDDLE AGED BEARDED CHAP,AS HE NOSED THROUGH THE DRIVERS WINDOW.........

I LOOKED UP AND SMILED.....''YEP,WHY WHAT HAVE YOU GOT?''

''OH,I GOT A T16S....''

''FLAT FRONT?...''

''YEP''

YOU SEE,THOU IS NEVER FAR FROM A SAAB NUTTER.......

ON RETURNING DOWN THE M6,I NOTICED A DISTURBING NOISE EMINATING FROM THE ENGINE BAY,RATHER RESONANT IN ORIENTATION  AT 3400 RPM/70 MPH

IS IT THE GEAR BOX

PULLING OVER INTO THE SERVICES,REVEALED THE VERY RESONANCE.......
THE U-SHAPED BRACKET ,THAT COVERS THE ALTERNATOR COOLING FAN BLADES,EVEN THOUGH THE BOLTS ARE TIGHT...........ASSUMES A 5MM VIBRATION FRENZY,WHEN WE HIT A STEADY 3400 RPM....

THE NOISE IS RATHER UNPLEASANT.......UNNERVING IN FACT

ANOTHER JOB TO FIX.....BUT AS WE HIT THE 1000 MILES MARK SINCE WE BUILT THE CAR......

A DODGY STARTER MOTOR,FAILED GLOVE BOX LID LOCK,AND HORN FUSE ARE THE ONLY MALADIES TO REPORT.........

THIS RATHER SOUNDS LIKE A GENUINE 1980 ROAD TEST,DOES IT NOT :corn:

PROCESS NOW IN MOTION TO FIT,THE 'HAND REARED' CYLINDER HEAD WITH 'THREE ANGLE VALVE SEATS',PORTED AND FLOWED.........TO SEE HOW MUCH WE CAN IMPROVE UPON?

BUT,BEFORE I EMBARK ON THIS LITTLE 'UPGRADE'........I HAVE DECIDED TO POLISH UP THE OUTSIDE OF ANOTHER INLET MANIFOLD,WHICH INVOLVES LOTS OF PATIENCE AND TIME(NO CHANGE THERE THEN)

I ALSO NEED TO MATCH UP THE INTAKE PORTS TO THE 'NEW' CYLINDER HEAD,MORE PAINSTAKING ALUMINIUM REMOVAL,AND CRAFTSMANSHIP.......AS THEY SAY

''IT'S GRIM UP, NORTH............ ''

Sorry BIRDIE. I really wouldn't like to stupidly subvert your serious petrolheadedness with cheap Swedish girlie pics. I know you'll gain no pleasure from them. Just think of them as an alternative to cars for young Sam.

WELL,CHAPS ME INTERNET IS STILL NAKARD.........

SO I AM AFRAID PICTURES WILL HAVE TO WAIT........

EARLY START........BRIGHT SUNSHINE(ROB, AS A WEATHERMAN.......... :cen: )

AMBIENT TEMPERATURE 19 DEG AT 07.30 ,ARRIVAL AT CIRCUIT
UNHITCH THE CAR,STRAIGHT INTO SCRUTINEERING,MUMBLES ABOUT ,WHAT'S THIS....WHATS THAT FOR?

GET ME TICKET,JUST AS WE GET BACK TO BASE.....MR.SHORT TURNS UP IN SAID QUATTRO,AND PARKS RIGHT NEXT TO US

A CONVOY RUN,TO START AT MEDIOCRE SPEED.........(OR A SIGHTING LAP IN TECHNICAL JARGON),JUST GIVES ME CHANCE TO WARM UP THE OIL ENGINE/TRANSMISSION.........AND ALLOW YOUNG'UN TO SIT NEXT TO ME, BEFORE IT ALL STARTS PROPER.......

THE FIRST OF TWO PRACTICE RUNS ROUND THIS VERY TIGHT AND TWISTY CIRCUIT..........

DID ME FIRST STAGE RALLY HERE,FIFTEEN YEARS AGO IN THE V4.....HAD IT ON TWO WHEELS,BOUNCING OFF THE TYRES....VERY ENTERTAINING,AND WE DIDN'T FINISH LAST EITHER!

ANYHOW,FAR TOO MUCH BOOST,(I WOUND IT UP TO AROUND 18PSI A FEW WEEKS BACK)SIMPLY CANNOT UTILISE IT..........SO FIRST JOB, IS TOO WIND IT BACK DOWN IN THE PADDOCK

TIME TAKEN 55.19 SECS PRACTICE 1
-------------------------------------------------

AN ARTICLE IN A 'TEST FEATURE' OF THE ORIGINAL WORKS 99 TURBO,BACK IN 1980.....

THE CAR WOULD NOT MAKE MAXIMUM BOOST,UNTIL INTO FOURTH GEAR......(BEARING IN MIND THE CAR WAS A FOUR SPED BOX GEARED FOR JUST 110MPH)

THROUGHOUT,1ST,2ND AND 3RD GEAR.........THE REVS SIMPLY VANISH, QUICKER THAN THE TURBO UNIT ,CAN OBTAIN FULL BOOST....?

SAAB WERE,USING A MUCH BIGGER COMPRESSOR WHEEL AND HOUSING,AT THE TIME

--------------------------------------------------

SO ,I AM ALSO EXPERIENCING THIS, IN 1ST,2ND AND THIRD GEAR,THAT IF IT MAKES 15 PSI BOOST...........ONCE INTO FOURTH,THE MAXIMUM BOOST WILL BE NEARER 18 PSI,OR THERABOUTS.........

SECOND PRACTICE RUN.....54.92 SECS............THINGS ARE REALLY STARTING TO GET HOT,INSIDE THE CAR.........AMBIENT AIR TEMPERATURE BY NOW IS 22 DEGREES........HOWEVER,THE COOLING FAN,AND INTERCOOLER WATER SPRAY,ARE DOING THEIR JOB FINE.........

WHY DID SAAB CHOOSE BLACK,IN THE COLOUR SCHEME.........?

TIME FOR A QUICK NATTER WITH MR.SHORT........HE HAS GOT A LOVELY SET OF BRIDGESTONE'S,FOUR WHEEL DRIVE AND 350 BHP....HE HAS ALSO,HAD TROUBLE WITH UNDERSTEER,SO SOME ALTERATIONS,HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT,TO TRY AND IMPROVE THIS...
BEAR IN MIND THAT THIS IS THE SLEEKER,SMOOTHER QUATTRO OF 1990.
AT HOME IN THE GARAGE, IS ONE OF THE ORIGINAL SHORT WHEEL BASE 'GROUP B' CARS.........WHICH HE HAS USED FOR SPRINTING.........ONCE :!:
FRONT WING IN KEVLAR................. £7500
OR HOW ABOUT A BONNET, IN THE VERY SAME £10,000
THAT IS WHY,IT IS IN THE GARAGE,VENTURING OUT FOR SHOWS ETC.....FAIR PLAY
DISCUSSING,THE VARIOUS JAP FOUR WHEEL DRIVE MACHINERY,WHICH IS ABSENT THIS WEEKEND..........MR.SHORT INFORMS ME,THAT ALTHOUGH HIS QUATTRO SPRINT CAR, IS CAPABLE OF PRODUCING IN EXCESS OF 500 BHP.......

HE IS SIMPLY NOT CONTENT, TO SPEND THAT AMOUNT OF MONEY ON IT.............

THE LOUDSPEAKER, BREAKS THE CONVERSATION.......

FIRST TWO TIMED RUNS

SAAB AUDI

55.02 SECS 52.24 SECS

54.77 SECS 51.83 SECS

TIME FOR LUNCH......
RUN THREE

SAAB AUDI

55.12 SECS 51.27 SECS

START LINING UP FOR RUN FOUR.......THE 99 T REFUSES TO START  GET THE BRIDGING WIRE OUT THE GLOVEBOX,TO RUN THE FUEL PUMP CONTINUALLY,IT BURSTS INTO LIFE.......REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP RELAY,AND IT STARTS FIRST TIME EVERY TIME......
MUST BE FUEL EVAPOURATION,AMBIENT TEMPERATURE NOW HITTING 26 DEGREES.......

RUN FOUR

SAAB AUDI

54.78 SECS 52.19 SECS

A SINGLE SEATER,CATCHES THE BACK END ON THE KERBS,SPINNING OFF INTO THE EMBANKMENT.......AMBULANCE TIME :(
THANKFULLY HE IS OK,JUST WHEELS HANGING OFF,AND NOSE CONE GONE......

RUN FIVE AND SIX

SAAB AUDI

54.81 SECS 51.52 SECS

54.84 SECS 51.49 SECS

TIME TO PACK UP FOR THE DAY,CAR STILL IN ONE PIECE ALONG WITH THE DRIVER.............

RESULT........... SECOND IN CLASS

BUT THEN, AS THERE WAS ONLY ME, AND THE AUDI..........THAT WEREN'T TOO DIFFICULT

ENTRIES WERE DOWN FROM 180 CARS TWO YEARS BACK,TO JUST EIGHTY CARS........

IT IS ,EXPENSIVE STUFF THIS MOTORSPORT LARK

CONCLUSIONS.......

THE CAR COULD DO WITH BEING LOWER,BUT THEN I HAVE THE SIXTEEN INCH,7.5J WHEELS TO GO ON YET.........?

I COULD DO WITH BETTER TYRES....SEE ABOVE

I COULD DO WITH MORE GRIP..............SEE ABOVE

SO FAR THIS YEAR, HAS REALLY BEEN ABOUT GETTING THE CAR OUT COMPETING..............ENJOYING IT

TWO YEARS SPENT RESTORING/PREPARING THE DAMN THING,REALLY TOOK IT'S TOLL.........ON ME PERSONALLY,THOSE AROUND ME :bag:

MONEY WAS NEVER REALLY AN ISSUE(THANKFULLY, AS I AINT GOT MUCH), THE GOVERNING FACTOR IN THE BUILD, WAS MY OWN TIME......LOTS OF IT

SO WHAT DID MR.SHORT, THINK OF THE OLD SAAB.........HIS CO-DRIVING DAYS, LONG SINCE GONE (CIRCA 1990)IN THE GROUP B QUATTRO

''I REMEMBER,STIG BLOMQVISTS CAR,JUST LIKE THIS............'' HE SAYS

''IN FACT,I USED TO HAVE ONE OF THESE..........A RED 99T TWO DOOR, LIKE THIS............IT WEN'T BACK TO SAAB, UNDER WARRANTY.....THE GEARBOX....!!''

SO, HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF,THE 99T BEATEN FAIR AND SQUARE BY A QUATTRO...........

I ENJOYED THE DAY.................MR.SHORT, EVEN SHOOK HANDS......

SO WILL, I BUILD A QUATTRO NEXT.....?

STIG ,NOW RESIDES FRIMLY BEHIND THE WHEEL OF THE ALL CONQUERING MKII ESCORT..........IT IS POSSIBLE ,TO CHANGE MARQUES?

JUST NOT YET......FOR ME ,ANYHOW

THANKS TO ALL INVOLVED, AND CHESTER MOTOR CLUB/MARSHALS

Nice write up Mr Holland..........and do you know something, 3 seconds(ish) may be alot around a short circuit, but most of that time is taken off by pure power out of bends and straights, would be nice to see a lap times around a not to bendy circuit, probably a constant 80/100mph circuit with a flying start.

COME TO THINK OF IT..........YOUR RIDE HEIGHT DOES LOOK RATHER HIGH.

I DON'T LIKE CRITISING MOST PEOPLE, BUT I KNOW YOU ARE DIFFERENT SO.......................

WHILST DRIVING YOUR CAR THE OTHER MONTH (I'VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT THIS QUITE ABIT NOW) I THOUGHT FOR SOME REASON THE STEERING WAS VERY LIGHT, SOMETHING NOT QUITE RIGHT, MAY HAVE BEEN THE TYRES............IT JUST DID NOT FEEL QUITE LIKE A 99 :? .................OBVIOUSLY, I COULD NOT TRY HARD IN IT AS IT IS NOT MY CAR + YOU TRUSTED ME, JUST TO HAVE A DRIVE, WHICH I AM VERY THANKFUL FOR........................I GAVE IT A LITTLE BIT ROUND THE ISLAND, BUT IT FELT LIKE THAT I COULD NOT BE CONFIDENT, IT FELT LIKE IT MAY BITE ME, DIFFICULT TO PUT INTO WORDS BIRDIE..............ERM........................OTHERS I HAVE DRIVEN OR OWNED FELT LIKE THEY WANTED TO BE CHUCKED ABOUT WILLY NILLY!.............FOR SOME REASON YOURS FELT AS THOUGH IT WANTED GO STRAIGHT INTO UNDERSTEER AS SOON A BOOST WAS ON TAP................DIFFICULT TO PUT A FINGER ON.................PERFORMANCE WISE AND BRAKES FELT SUPER DUPER THOUGH.................I ALWAYS THOUGHT THE 99 WHEN JUST ABOUT TO ENTER UNDERSTEER THE WHEEL ALWAYS WENT VERY SLIGHTLY HEAVIER AND YOU COULD FEEL THE ROAD AND ON LONG FAST BENDS, YOU KNEW JUST BEFORE HAND YOU WERE GOING TO ENTER THE SCENERY AND COULD VERY SLIGHTLY BACK OFF THE THROTTLE OR LFB WITH FULL POWER......................

......................IT CERTAINLY FELT VERY LIGHT THE STERRING, MAYBE THE GEOMETRY, MAYBE NEEDS 1/1.5 DEGREES TOW OUT.

I KNOW YOU WILL NOT TAKE OFFENCE BY WHAT I HAVE SAID

CHEERS FOR NOW

ROB

It's usually toe-in which makes it feel like that. The cars with manual steering are much more sensitive to toe settings. I've tried toe-in, toe-out and dead on zero seemed to be the setting I liked the most so that's how it's set at the moment. I think the settings often banded about for 900 turbos is the usual 1.5 negative camber and a pinch of toe-in. I tried toe-in on that basis and found it made the car much too twitchy and prone to wheelspin and torque steer.

SAABs were 0 degress, toe-in is a NO,NO, the 1.5 degress came from memory from what we were told from SAAB comp dep't, 1.5 degree camber on the front and also 1.5 degrees on the back.

This was acheived by literally bending the back axle with a trolley jack and chain, crude but effective and with it being a rally car a section of angled steel was welded along it's length, Too much toe out and camber at the front will result in the biggest flicking out of the back end you have ever had, been there and it flippin' frightening.

I think late on, we hade the stub axles bent

Rob
