So, the Pioneer 8700 arrived today. I have removed the AS2 unit from the car. I also need a SMA-SMB connector. That has been ordered online. The good news is that my fm aerial should be OK!

Done some dremel work to the gear surround. I took some pics. My SD card is refusing to play ball. I will have another go tomorrow.....

I had some. Card needed a format. Me can't format. Summat is wrong. I'm charging the battery for me big camera.

I probably won't feel like taking pics when it will be charged. Hey ho!

Tomorrow is another day!

GOT PICS!

This is where I was last night.. Pic is a bit naff... Sorry'bout that!

Image

Much huffing and puffing got me here,

Image

The gear surround took a hit with this wiring run,

Image

Good job that I have a spare one or two! Swapped them over fitting new bulbs as I went..

Only got to fill the hole when the aerial coupler gets here..
Image

I re-routed the fm aerial and extended the DAB one from the glovebox.

At least I can have things in the sockets when I park the car up now! This is why I splurged on another DAB... Mainly!

Today I had a "trial fit" It all works, mostly.

Biggest niggle-- The unit sticks out about 1" from the dash. This isn't good, so, I brought most of the ingredients in here.

Got Plan A. I've cut an old cage back a bit..

Here,
Image

Image

Spot the missing bit. Tis likely to be fitted in upside down if I use Plan A!!

Plan B is just to fit this,

Time will tell.....

Don't fret! All cut edges have been taped over.

I hope that Plan B works. This plan will leave loadsa space for all the extra cables!

It's fitted. All should be good. It isn't.

The DAB reception is bad. FM reception is not there at all. Something is very wrong with my year old DAB/fm aerial.

The connection for the DAB is a bit flaky, to say the least. I have spent the last hour or so looking at China RF's website.

They must have every single connector on the planet. The one I want doesn't seem to exist... PAHH!

Anyhoo, here is Plan B!
Image

Tis a good fit. Pity about the aerial mess....

I have a vid uploading. I will stick that up when it has finished loading...

Si,

Try disconnecting your USB charger thing and see if that changes the FM reception.

I had one of those cheapo charger things and my FM went to ratpoo when it was connected; I took it off, and normal service was resumed. May be something else entirely, but it's worth checking - some of them emit huge amounts of radio interference....

Cheers for this Rich!

I have a similar probeloid with the van.... It's not the splitter--- It's a particular charger lead.

The new DAB aerial arrived today. I will see wot appens when it appens!

Not sure that the splitter in the car messes with the fm. I might need to buy the connector to fit onto the factory fm input....

This is one Shirley painful job. That's for Shirley!!! :D

Fitted the new aerial! It's a CT27UV70 amplified one. Cost £18 odd.

For an internal glass fit, it is pretty good.

Image

Kinda sorted the fm. I can get some reception on there now...

The bluetooth is jolly good...

Image

The remote is very useful as well. I would say that the set up is pretty good. I will have to sort the fm out when it gets warmer..

The secret weapon didn't work. BASKET!! It was a fraction too wide.

I went and spent £2.49 on the ISO connector. That didn't work either.

I can only suppose that the actual roof mounted aerial is gubbed somehow. So, I have just bought another blooming one!

Watch this space.......

Don't hold your breath though! :park:

I won't. I'm still waiting for my aerial to turn up.
I won't be using Flubit again!

WOW!! Just blooming WOW! I am getting sick of this now. Another new aerial. Tis still pants. Even with the broken factory aerial that picks up stuff on the AS2 unit.

I have ripped out the new stuff nearly in a huff yesterday. Put the AS2 stuff back in. Imagine my amazement when the old stuff found about 20 fm stations...... I was going to set fire to Espresso. This would have been a bit silly. She's parked outside me bedroom window......... :park:

So. this morning I took all the AS2 out and put the 8700 stuff back in. With a sneaky aerial adapter fitted.. Not good.

I had to buy a new pooter to read the online manual stuff. How cool is this? Me old pooter blew a HDD yesterday....

You have to have fm switched on. How stoopid is this? I will report back later this week... All other op's have been suspended for another blooming weekend dealing with 9-5 and pooter stuff. And the rain. It was chucking down in Swindon today.

Match abandoned. 8700 is on it's way back to the seller. I will have to wait for his report before I move further.....

Glad you got there in the end, Si :) Is there a difference in the sound quality between the stock Saab headunit and the Pioneer on the standard AS2 amp and speakers? I have a Kenwood KDC-BT92SD left over from my Celica and was hoping to put it in so I can have USB playback again.

We feel the sound from the Kenwood DNX-4210DAB is slightly better than the OE Pioneer head unit. Been in the 9-5 for 4 years.
