hi

i thought it was about time i started a project thread for my 9-5 aero. its as much for me to keep a log on whats been done, and for everyone else's input and ideas.

ive never had a 9-5 before or a 2.3 or dealt with the t7 software............

i brought this car 3 weeks ago now, from a forum member's brother. it has been very well looked after and boasts a few extra goodies
bridge spoiler
harmon kardon 9-speaker AS3 sound system
noobtuned to stage 1 & open SID
cruise control

and the usuall AERO package.

heres a few pics (previous owners pics)

i have built up a list of things to do to her:
sump drop
pcv pipes
refurb sid
sort out the squeeky engine pulley + engine light on
cam cover gasket + retorque, etc.
service, spare DI, a/c panel refurb, 18" alloys, align steerign wheel.

so first up was the CEL light + the squeeky (very enoying) pulley.
i got the car booked in a neo's the weekend after i picked it up, the CEL light ended up being a faulty DI which i found hard to believe as previous owner had said it was a new one on there.
still i bit the bullet and while it was up on the ramps i said change the DI over for a second hand one. £90 later + £35 just to read the code.
CEL hasnt come back on yet. but i will check the spark plugs as it maybe eating DI's

the squeeky noise from the engine ended up being the crank pulley. so they changed that over + fitted a new crank pulley oil seal. happy days

i sent the SID 2 off to SIDMASTER great service from this guy. had it back within a few days...
all fine.

so working my way down the list weekend by weekend. second up was the sump drop but i decided to do this properly so i ordered main dealer parts :|

WHITEMORES CHISLEHURST, GM main dealer had a long chat with the parts guy there, he had much trouble trying to order these seals from sweeden, one day he rang up they was there the next day they wernt :(
Image

3 x new o-rings 1x strainer o-ring 9138009 & 2x oil feed o-rings 9137993
i brought a oil filter wrench as i allways have trouble removing old oil filters.
new sump plug and washer
loctite 518
genuine saab oil filter
mobil 1 0w-40
and a pcv pipe (oil seperator to sump)

i could of got this done by neo's but this was something i needed to do myself, for my own peace of mind :)

on dropping the sump i realised i was in for a fight, as i read loads of reviews on how to do this, but nothing i read covered my sump, i had some sort of rare sump that was fitted to a few b235R's
i had to SMASH MY SUMP TO BITS literally lol

Image

Image

after finally have to unbolt the gearbox bolts etc. my sump was finally loose so a little hand gesture and jackign up of the gearbox she was free.

first impressions she didnt look too bad tbh, this is an aero mind you and was meant to be fed fully synthetc oil all its life:

Image

Image

no sludge anywhere  and it deffinatly hadnt been dropped before as the sump casings hadnt been knocked out........

Image

even the strainer had only a few bits here and there but nothing major atall.
Image

replaced the o-ring on the strainer pipe
Image

also i replaced the o-rings on the oil feed pipe, this often gets over looked and just aswell i did, as the seals were rock solid and obviously not sealing anything.

Image

cleaned as much as i could, with heavy duty grease gobler, and wd40 etc

Image

started fitting it back together

Image

with loctite 518

update:

today i flushed the coolant system.
plus fitted a new thermostat and temperature sensor....

filled the system with a 40% mix of nice orange coolant and the rest de-ironised water....

also i brought some 3mm blue silicone and replaced all of the small vac hoses. this needed doing as alot of them were just crumbling away... i wanted to replace the 6mm APC lines but this was more difficlut to do, so it will wait for another (warmer) day :)

ive ordered the latest pcv kit from parts for saabs, so i will fit that when it comes.

i hopefully have a YELLOW cam cover on its way :D and before i fit it, i will obviously replace the gasket and do the headbolt retorque while im there.

next on the list:

sparks
induction kit (ive only seen the speedparts item)
fuel filter
cabin filter
poly-bush rear end
rear disks & pads
a/c panel refurb
headlamp protectors
19" alloys :D

You shouldn't use de ironised water in engines, it eats metal.

Reminds me of Rich's old 95....

Would look hard with a set of black or grey wheels on it though, not sure what you have planned to fit.

Please lose the nasty 2.3 Turbo badge on the back though...

not actually true, de-ionised water is just pure water with no minerals or other dissolved solids.. and should be PH neutral..
infact the cooling water on HM ships and submarines is made water (i.e distilled from salt water) that is passed through an ion exchange column (de-ionised)

the antifreeze is also a corrosion inhibitor.

I'd run DI over tap water.

i have 18 or 19's planned for it. just waiting for the right set to come up on ebay i have around £300 for a set..

in the mean time, i have fitted my 17" lenso samurai super lights :D and OMG i think they look amazing. they are a bronze/gold colour, plus the centre caps from the hammer-heads fit which make them looks even better, with an oem look.

i was umming and arghing about loosing the 2.3 turbo badge. previous owner had it on there, i havnt decided if i like it or not yet :(

i only had 2 lenso centre caps with these alloys. so i started to think and have a bit of a play, and luckily these fitted perfectly :D

Image

Image

yep the centre caps from the hammerheads fitted fine (i have the hammerheads for sale if anyone interested :) )

just awaiting my cam cover to be painted (martyn)

Dai - yes mate. ive currently got the hammerheads on my ng900, just so it can be rolled............and no problems with offset or anything. actually look quiet nice. :)

i was well happy with cracking under 15 seconds, my stage 3 900 with 255bhp only managed 15.8 :( but i was getting soooo much wheelspin off the line. the 9-5 has traction control and was very good off the line. :)

i beat an 04 plate civic type r, he beat me off the line but the 9-5 over-took it in 3rd gear :)
also was level with an r32 all the way up...........

its a sony ericsson cradle - but fits my blackberry fine :)

alloys are even better when clean, - ill get some better pics up this weekend, - they are not blingy atall as i really dont like blingy wheels....

i have thought about fitting some 10mm spacers but im nervous about doing it, as ive heard some nightmare dramas......

I had 25mm hubcentric spacers on the front of my BMW (M3 wheels on a non M car.. the front offset is et46, and the rear is et27) - the ones that you bolt to the hubs, then you bolt the wheel to the spacers, to push the wheels right out into the arches. never had a problem, no vibration, wobble etc.. I wouldnt use the spacers that push the wheel past the spigot and make them bolt centric instead of hub centric but people that slate spacers are scare mongers that have probably never used them.

Image

now I've lowered my 93 i'm probably going to do the same.. maybe 20mm all round
