over the last 3 years i have been restoring my 1980 Black 99T, i've had a thread on saab central but i thought i'd transfer over to UKSaabs.

Background;
The car was bought by myself in June 2007, it was sold as spares really. although the seller did seem to think, it only needed new bushes.....

Right! the gauntlet has been thrown and a 99T restoration is well underway.

We hope to keep a diary here for ourselfs and others to view and advise

After a very short dicision to restore a 99, myself and Johnathon borrowed a mates trailer and hiked off down to Birmingham to collect a rather sorry Black 99T. never the less we both still had smiles on our faces when we saw her!

here is a few photos. some of which have been seen before, but are better off shown here..

Also a link to the restoration in photos : http://s12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...99T/?start=all

Our old girl on the back of the trailer
Image
This was actually a very good experience, both of us thought we'd have a bit of trouble towing two tonnes 300 odd miles in a 900XS!

A short drive before she was stuck on axle stands!
Image

The Cabin, what a sight!
Image

We struggled and swore a lot, but shes in now
Image

More to come when we manage to work out how a grinder works

And a few days later and a LOT of tea/coffee later

We also managed to remove the rear beam...with difficulty
Image

Now for some practice on the new MIG welder before we dare to touch the body work!

until then!

I got a bit more work done on the rear end today. cleaned and painted the rear beam section.
Started grinding off the filler and underseal from the other rear arch too. and i didnt really find any nasty surprises. yepee!

Note the dust that has stuck to the wet paint

I'll start with a few cheary pics before the doom and gloom

Taken just before the restoration started!
Image

Image

And Finally the carnage that was discoverd behind the fuel tank.

As you can see Jonathan is holding the Torque arm along with its bracket, otherwise it would be on the floor somewhere never to be seen again!
Image

another pic of the damage but its somewhat blurry.
Image

Oh well onwards to the next time. i must remember to buy more cutting disks....what a sad thought

Today i cut the new section from the 900 donor car. apart from the fuel tank opening being on the o/s on the 900 the panel is exactly the same and will be a simple weld in job. although its never really that simple

I think over the next few sessions myself and jonathan will get a great deal of work done!

heres some pics!

The hole where the new panel was cut from
Image

The old panel still on the 99

The new Panel

And the petrol tank cavity

Well i got cracking with more welding and grinding today.

My new welder is brilliant. i bought a Clarke 100E and its not given me a minute of bother.

and the new vice is well up to the challenge and more...

I cleaned up the replacement panel for the torque arm mount, welded it to strenghten it in places.

Finally i got it welded to the car and im pretty happy with the results, even if i did manage to cut one side 1cm too short....lol

heres some pics

The new vice, chirst could i have bought a bigger one!!

work has started back on Golly again!!

Image

all welded up!
Image
this isnt the most recent pic, its all been flatted down now and finished

Image
i've welded half the inner arch in and just tacked the outer arch in

The rear beam and fuel tank will be going back on soon. that reminds me. are the fuel tank straps available or any work arounds you guys have come across?

I need a front N/S wing now they are a PITA to find. might be another 900 arch going on there, but i think there a differnt circumfrence

these guys look promising for the rear panels though, http://bap.dominohosting.biz/bap/bap...%2099%20(69-84)

mean-while, i'll bash on....literally!

Well....... how long has it been?!

I don't know where to start in updating this thread now! here goes...

As you might have guessed i'd forgotten i had a camera until today.

Since last time myself and Jonathon have been working away like wee trolls on Golly, so much grinding, so much welding, so much DUST!!! but atleast through all this we've been kept nice and warm with my new addition to the garage, a space heater!! its only a small one but it warms up the garage in a few wee minutes, "tis braw!" i've also acquired a Snap On welder, or a rebadged Cebora... its had a good few hours use in its life but the internals have been kept cleaned and renewed so its proved itself to me after my 2nd budget welder gave up the ghost. i do keep meaning to buy the parts for it and fix it!

Right enough talk and more pics!

Update!

I've been stock piling like a hampster since i went offshore for the new year, apparently my parents are getting fed up with boxes arriving

i've bought new lowering springs from kilen, fuel hose, going to try and re-use the old fittings. caliper rebuild kits. the last of the suspension parts i needed should be there too.

the project should move on rapidly when i get back...well after my holiday to london with a madam...

the fuel tank is on loosely, myself and jonathon refurbished the tank straps, they came up great. i welded up 1 new hook which will do the job nicely, the other hook was still good.

The fuel accumulator cleaned up nicely, but theres only one way to know if the rubber diaphragm has survived the last year and half with the air on it. and thats when i start the car for the first time

once the rear beam is on, its time to do the sills and front archs...ohh god....

until next time!

A BIG goal has been reached with Golly!!!

4 wheels are on the ground! =)
i've been busy rebuilding the rear brake calipers, remaking fuel lines, fitting the fuel tank and fitting the rear suspension. its now slightly lower than previous by 20mm~. the car doesn't seem to feel too stiff at all. but i haven't taken it for a test drive(obviously!) and theres cheap oil shocks on until i can afford good ones.

anyways! heres the usual barrage of photos =D

these pics were taken a week ago, im offshore now so there wont be any progress for a while!

Well, i've actually done some more work - and i bought that C900, a black 3dr T16 from 1985. its now got tan leather with aero skirts :-D

i'm trying to finish up the front nearside wing now, once i get into it, it doesnt take long but i inevitably end up doing something else.....

heres the welding completed on the wing, im now concentrating on the driveshaft tunnel which isnt actually that bad

pics as ever;

Great work, I will be following this with interest.

Every time I read 99 restoration my want/lust is rekindled,
then I see the rust and work required and get a reality check
