Hello Saab fans! I'm Andy Hardcore, and this is my Saab 8)

Image

I've had loads of cars, but never a Saab, and so far I'm really enjoying it!

Things done so far:
- Oil change
- Replaced the DIC (fortunately I had a OE Saab one spare already) which has cleared up 99.9% of the misfires it came with
- Removed the alarm (which kept going off, and the 'Service Theft Alarm' warning was showing) - internal backup battery dead I guess?
- Read & cleared the fault codes as EML was on (was sold to me like it, evidently I like taking risks) - was showing a coolant temp sensor fault so will replace that - light hasn't come back on since anyway
- Fitted Vectra B coilovers (can't remember the brand but they were TUV approved ones from Germany - rides really nicely) - rears were a direct fit, fronts not so much
- Changed the wheels for Brabus Monoblock IIs, with the correct spigot rings and 'adaptor' bolts - new 215/45-17 tyres
- New Bosch Aero wiper blades

I'm super happy with how it has turned out so far :D

Jobs for this weekend:
- I just ordered the full breather / vent pipe kit (from Neo Brothers)..
- ..and will drop the sump to give it and the oil strainer a clean out
- Full service - I have bought every filter as I've no idea when they were last changed
- Spark plugs - I bought the NGK ones everyone seems to recommend for these, hopefully that will eradicate the remaining tiny/occasional misfire
- Rocker cover gasket, seems to be leaking - tho it could also be the breathers, but will change anyway
- Fit a new coolant temp sensor, think I've got one somewhere
- Give it a bath (very needed, as is pretty obvious from the photos)

Stuff for the future..:
- Mebbe fix the alarm (if only to make the warning go away)
- Few bits of paintwork need attention; scuffs on the mirrors are the worst of it
- Make it go faster 8) will be looking at the experiences of people on here for the best options in that regard
- Front disks have a slight vibration, so will replace at some point - pads look as-new. Are there any cost-effective racier options that people would recommend?

Happy to hear any comments or pearls of wisdom :D

Great looking 9-5 you have there.
Interesting shape of red, somewhere under the muck!
Sounds like you have a good handle on the current and future jobs on the old gal.

Welcome. Sitting a little low for me but each to their own. You can make it quicker quite cheaply and very easily. I would suggest replacing some of the suspension bushes first with poly and get some bilstein dampers on it with eibah springs, but if you're happy with coilovers...........

However, it is then a very slippery slope.............................lol

Thanks for the kind words & warm welcome - I had been told by a couple of friends to expect that on here so that's great :)

Quick update from the at the weekend:
- Fitted the breather / vent pipe kit - a more horrible job than I'd imagined (I'm not used to cars with the engine the wrong way round!) but I must say the kit seems excellent and the service from Neo Brothers was fantastic
- Drop the sump to give it and the oil strainer a clean out - didn't get to this, the pipes took longer than I'd hoped, and having jacked it up & looked at it for the first time this appears to be a much more serious undertaking than I'd anticipated (see comment about wrong way round engines!) - looks like the subframe would need lowering, or the engine raising to get it off, or am I mistaken?
- Full service - done. Just the fuel filter left to do
- Spark plugs - NGK BCPR7ES gapped to 0.9mm fitted - old ones looked ok - annoyingly the tiny/occasional misfire remains. Current theory is it's over-fuelling due to the coolant temp sensor (is 26-27mpg normal?)
- Rocker cover gasket - done. Don't think it was actually leaking in the end, but was glad to see everything inside looking perfect
- Fit a new coolant temp sensor, think I've got one somewhere - couldn't find it, will order one

Ran out of time to wash it too :P

I haven't got the info in front of me at the moment, but I think that Saab recommend a wooden wedge to get the sump to clear. There are also some years where there are hidden bolts and to have to break away a bit of the sump!! It stays that way and isn't a problem in the future... :D

Hi All, been a while.. not really done much with the Saab (other than drive it every day & put about 10k miles on it!). I fitted a new CTS a while ago, which turned the EML off, and it drove fine for a good while after, but has now developed a very noticeable flat spot at around 3700-4k rpm. All fine otherwise.. A friend following me the other day said it smelt fuely when I hoofed it, so I guess that could be related.. Any wisdom from the oracles please? :)

Did you ever change the alarm battery? My service message is on as well and it's getting annoying!

(Not as annoying as the warning that my washer fluid is low, mind!)
