So I thought I would start a project thread on my newly aquired 9-5 Aero. Before I start I have no definite plans either way regarding modifications (finances) but figured what the hell I'll start a thread and see where it goes. I'll stick some pics on at the end of this intro. Most of my cash will probably get sucked up with maintenance but I do intend to do some thorough homework so that if the time comes and further mods are possible, I'll at least have a fighting chance of knowing what I'm doing!

Firstly myself: I live in South Norfolk near Diss and this is my 10th Saab. My penchant for the brand stems from growing up with Saabs (amongst others) as dad was in the trade working for Gordon Lamb. As a kid I had holidays across France, Sweden and the British Isles, with many miles soaked up in a Saab from the early 95 and 96s to the then new 99 and subsequent classic 900.I remember my first ride in a 99 turbo. It was of course black with cheesegrater wheels. Back then it was like nothing else! I would have been 8 years old. Fast forward and my first Saab was a 3 year old GM 900 T sensonic coupe. It went on to have some Abbott Racing mods and that car started the trend.

So onto RCP. I bought it last month after spotting it for sale on you know where................

Some of you will know this car or at least remember it from previous owner Ant9-5Aero who spent a lot of time and money getting it to where it is mod wise. For those that haven't come across the car before let me fill you in on some details.

2006 9-5 DE Aero saloon in chilli red metallic. FSH and currently showing a miserly 63K on the clock!

Factory spec as follows:

Aforementioned red metallic with creme leather

Xenon headlamps

Rear parking sensors

Auto wipers

Boot spoiler

Heated and ventilated driver's and front passenger seats

Electric front seats, driver's with memory

Heated rear seats

Electric tilt and slide glass sunroof

Sat nav with upgraded stereo

Cruise control

Electric folding door mirrors

Automatic dimming rear view mirror

Automatic dimming door mirrors

Nearside reverse mirror tilt function

Parrot CK3100 handsfree kit

Nextbase hardwired dash camera

And now the interesting stuff.........................

Chassis:

B8s with Eibach springs

Fully poly bushed throughout

Maptun front strut brace

Hirsch 19" 3 spokes with 235/35/R19 tyres

Maptun 6 pot calipers up front with 355 mm floating disks and Maptun pads

Vented, grooved and drilled rear disks with redstuff pads

Transmission:

5 speed manual

Maptun spec 6 puk friction plate with standard Aero pressure plate and flywheel

Poly gearbox mounts

Poly engine mounts

Engine:

Full Abbott Racing 3" exhaust with downpipe and race cat

Abbott intercooler

Maptun recirculating dump valve

Bosch 3.5 bar FPR

Maptun software with maptuner

Currently estimated to be pushing around 320bhp at stage 3+

So what have I done so far? Not much as I haven't had her long. I'm still in that learning phase. I have identified a few things that need attention however:

The sunroof sliding panel was very loose so I have temporarily fixed this by sticking some felt pads between it and the headlining for now. Once the weather gets warmer I'll look at dropping the headlining and appropriating a proper fix.

I managed to source a 2014/15 disk for the nav so that's in and seems to function well.

The interior got a good valet, not dirty just grubby in all the places that don't get done every time. This included cleaning and feeding the leather.

I replaced the auto dimming door mirror glass due to the originals going smoky.

There is small scratch on the dash behind the steering wheel, probably caused by a finger nail or maybe a ring? Will look at some kind of smart repair for this.

The nearside front wheel has a kerb mark so that will be done soon.

Longer term plans for the summer are getting the front end resprayed. There are quite a few stone chips and the door mirror casing need doing too.

Anyway, today the weather was favourable so the car got a good fettle! Below are some pics. I hope you approve and I'll update as and when.

Cheers Jimbo

Simply Stunning - you have no idea how much I miss and regret selling this car.

All bar the Abbott Intercooler - its exactly as I sold it (maybe a little cleaner :) )

This car drives simply with perfection!. Handles simply STUNNING, pulls like an absolute train and would stop on a dime!

Treat her well mate - wish you were closer, look after her, and if you ever think of selling her - I want first dibs (just needed to say that now, so no one else gets in!)

Beautiful.

I've always loved this 9-5. Even with the cream interior.....;-)

Great to see it being looked after again. Saw it advertised on the bay and was sorely tempted, however, had promised that I won't buy another car until 2018.....
Enjoy.

What a stunning car.
It reminds me of the Hirsch tweaked 9-5 I reluctantly sold a few years ago, pre-Dame Edna.

It was a proper beast.

Yours is a special car for sure.

Unfortunately nothing further to report so far. Thursday I was going to attempt to re-hang the rear box as I feel it is knocking slightly on the rear valance frame and also I have identified that the underside of the boot where the spoiler is attached has some corrosion around the mounting bolts. I was going to clean this up.

However.............................Storm Doris then decided to alleviate me of my new garden shed and lift the newly laid canopy to the carport so car jobs rapidly took a back seat! :wall:

Took the car down to London Excel exhibition centre on Sunday for the classic car show. Faultless but I must say the spec clutch needs taming when driving across London!

My mate who came with me has a Mini Cooper S and has just bought a 326bhp Camaro. he thought the 9-5 was very refined and 'proper quick'

More to follow as and when.

Peace, Jimbo

Lovely looking car - looks absolutely sorted. Would get some serious interest at a Saab meet!

I've noticed some buffeting coming from the top of the front passenger door and it looks like it was sitting a mm or two proud on the frame when shut so today window down and some old fashioned grunt has hopefully sorted that!

Ordered some black hammerite paint for the rear brake hubs and calipers. That will be done once it warms up a bit.

Noticed a slight knock from somewhere, I think the rear so in to my garage tomorrow for a good check over underneath and a general look over.

Another 1K and I'll be giving it my first oil change. Considering having the gearbox oil done at the same time but what to use?

Jimbo

Knocking defo from the rear Jimbo?

Check the front drop links. I think that's about the only suspension part that I didn't have renewed / pollyed.

On the rear - everything is polly that was available and I also had all the rose bushes replaced on the hub. Still possible of course..

Gearbox oil was renewed with Saab stuff when the clutch was done FYI :)

Ok thanks for that Ant. Could be the front as I have caught a couple of potholes in the dark recently :wall:

Hopefully find out tomorrow.

Cheers

This morning I have ascertained that the inner door trims can be removed without removing the whole door card. Many of you will no doubt know this but I was finding it difficult to get a definitive answer so I had ago myself. This is excellent news because I want to remove them and spray them up due to scratches and a generally poor finish. It won't be done until it's warmer for obvious reasons. DIY spraying is never ideal at the best of times. At least not at mine!

Image

Simply pry off the outer door handle casing from the top down, then pop out the left edge (this is the driver's door remember) of the trim (there are two tabs that need to be pushed in (easy to see) then prise off moving to the right.

Adjust left/right depending on which door you're working on.

Make sense? They are clipped in fairly well so be prepared for a good tug, ahem......................

I also ordered two front drop links from Neos today, should be with me tomorrow and hopefully I will have time to fit before I shoot off to Derbyshire after school kick out.

Jimbo

So what's the general consensus on good drop links on these? I went through a few sets of cheap (from ECP) ones on my V70. My MOT tester said to me "those cheap drop links will only last months", well he was wrong.........mostly they lasted weeks. And then I put up with clonking for 11 months until they were renewed again for the next MOT. Eventually I dug deeper and forked out on Meyle HD ones as recommended by the guys on the VPCUK forum, and they seem to be holding up. I presume Meyle do ones for Saabs too.

I bought mine from NEOs

They're not genuine but alternatives. Doesn't state brand. I'll see how they go. £21 :?:

I fitted the heavy duty ones.

Similar ones for the 9-3SS.
