99 COMBI-COUPE TURBOCHARGED......

THE CHILDHOOD DREAM..............?

IS TO TAKE IT............

TO COLORADO, PIKE'S PEAK.....AND FOLLOW IN THE FOOTSTEP'S OF BLOMQVIST,EKLUND AND VATANEN......

BUT FIRST,I HAVE TO BUILD IT.......THERE ARE MANY SEEMINGLY INSURMOUNTABLE PROBLEM'S AND ISSUE'S DOING THIS......

THIS PROJECT HAS BEEN FIVE YEAR'S IN THE MAKING,COLLECTING LOT'S OF VARIOUS COMPONENT'S........

THE FINAL HURDLE,AND THE MOST TIME CONSUMING, WILL BE THE ENGINE.......

I AM AIMING FOR AS MUCH TORQUE, AS POSSIBLE FROM THE SAAB PART'S BIN.......

A 2.3T, LOOK'S TO BE THE FAVOURITE AT THE MOMENT....

THE DEVIL'S PLAYGROUND INDEED, THIS WILL BE SOME 'FRANKENSTEIN'..........

We had a 76 Combi in exactly that colour scheme! Put some Bilsteins and a set of 6x15 TR6 offset steel rims on it, looked great. Handled well, mostly....it tramlined like a b :cen: d

Got to admire you starting ANOTHER project before you've finished the last one.

One moderately significant challenge on the 2.3T plan, Jules. How do you stop the long throw crank fouling on the gearbox?

That first video.... :argh:

THE 2.3 CRANK WILL SWING,IF YOU MACHINE IT.....I HAVE AN EMPTY GEARCASING HERE,JUST HAVE TO GET THE 2.3 ENGINE,SOME 2.1 RODS......NEXT FEW MONTH'S ARE OUT THE QUESTION,AS I HAVE FAR TOO MUCH GOING ON IN LIFE.....

NOT GOING TO 'SPECULATE' TOO MUCH HERE,BUT I HAVE SEEN IT DONE ......

LET'S GET THE BIT'S TOGETHER,FOR THE ENGINE AND START A 'DRY' BUILD......

THE FIRST GENERATION MOTOR HOWEVER,I WILL GOING FOR '7.2 TO 1' 99 TURBO PISTONS IN AN EARLY B202 16V TURBO,TO SEE HOW MUCH TORQUE WE CAN GENERATE.....AND HOW MUCH BOOST....

BUT HERE IS THE 'CATCH'....

I PLAN TO BE USING K-JETRONIC,IN A 16V TURBO.......

I HAVE THE BULKHEAD 'WATER PUMP' CUT-OUT READY TO WELD INTO THE COMBI-COUPE.....

THIS THREAD WILL HOPEFULLY RUN IN CONJUNCTION,WITH THE GUY'S OVER AT 'SAABRALLY.COM'

THERE IS SOME VERY INTERESTING READING OVER THERE, YOU KNOW...... :corn:

Insanity and genius - love it

The colour scheme looks good too 8)

Making the crank fit and spin won't be the biggest issue.......keeping the torque from chewing the gearbox to pieces will be more problematic.

You might be needing a big turbo with a higher than usual pressure ratio accross the compressor wheel - at the top of pikes peak, the air pressure is significantly less, and thus reduces the amount of boost a turbo can effectively make. There was a very informative article on the Arrow Generics (pharmaceutical company) sponsored RS200 that did the Hill a few years back, I'll have to see if I can find it.......

Had you considered using Trionic 5 mr Mango? Whilst not in keeping with the period theme as much as K-Jet, it will allow more precise mapping, better more accurate fuelling, easier to track down problems and anyone with a laptop and a cable can upload a map from anyone else in the world for you :park:

HELLO MCVITIES,

I WONDERED HOW LONG IT WOULD TAKE,FOR THE GEARBOX ISSUE TO REAR IT'S UGLY HEAD......

I HAVE SPENT MANY,MANY YEARS COMPETING IN SAAB'S NOW WITH STANDARD GEARBOX'S.....MAYBE IT TAKE'S A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT KIND OF DRIVING APPROACH...? BUT IF YOU UNDERSTAND THE 'MECHANICS' OF THINGS,AND YOU KNOW YOU ARE GOING TO BE THE ONE CHANGING THE GEARBOX ALL THE TIME,IT MAKE'S YOU VERY RESPECTFUL AS TO THE LOADING'S APPLIED TO THE TRANSMISSION.......

A SAAB 99 COMBI-COUPE IS A VERY HEAVY CAR,IT ALL COMES DOWN TO MOMENTUM....

ALLEGEDLY,SAAB CHOSE TO USE THE 2 DOOR BODYSHELL FOR RALLYING,AS IT WAS STIFFER AND 40KG LIGHTER.....

I AM USING THE COMBI-COUPE,AS I CONSIDER IT RATHER ICONIC....AND IT SHOULDN'T BE TOO HARD TO GET RID OF 40 KG.....

REMEMBER THE CLARION 99 TURBO IS CORNER WEIGHTED,IN ROAD GOING FORM AT 1140KG...

WHILST I AM CONSIDERING AN 99 'LSD' AT THE MOMENT,I HAVEN'T COMPLETELY RULED OUT,FITTING AN TRANSVERSE 9000&GEARBOX(AS PER THE SAAB MUSEUM PROTOTYPE CLASSIC 900)..........BUT YET AGAIN,THIS PRESENT'S THE DREADED TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS.......

AS REGARD'S TRIONIC 5......

I SPEND MY LIFE,FIXING DEFICIENT MODERN ELECTRICKERY......

SORRY TO DISSAPOINT,BUT IT GOES WRONG ALL THE TIME.......  I JUST DON'T HAVE ANY FAITH,IN MODERN TECHNOLOGY.....

EVEN WATCHING GUY MARTIN'S RECENT EVENT'S AT TACKLING 'PIKE PEAK' ON THE 'TURBO MARTEK'....IT WAS ELECTRICS YET AGAIN,THAT LET HIM DOWN......NOT HIS MECHANICAL SKILLS...

SAAB MANAGED TO GET OVER 300 BHP,FROM K-JET WITH THE RALLY 8V 99 TURBO'S....ALBEIT WITH OIL PUMPED/COOLED DIFF'S,AND UPGRADED DRIVESHAFT'S.......

I GREW UP IN AN ERA WHERE TORQUE& BRAKE HORSE POWER COMES FROM MACHINING,PORTING AND BALANCING....NOT SOME SPOTTY GEEK,SAT BEHIND HIS ZX81.....

AND I AIN'T GOT A TELEVISION PRODUCTION COMPANY,TO PAY MY EXPENSES EITHER.... :corn:

Thinking about something similar, just picked this up...

I've done some rough measuring and I reckon I can put all the bits from this 400bhp ish 4 wheel drive into it :)

IT WAS RATHER IRONIC THAT IT TOOK TWO CHAP'S COMBINED AGE OF 95.....TO ACTUALLY GET THIS 95 MOVING AGAIN.....

MUCH EASIER TO LET 175BHP,TAKE THE STRAIN..... :corn:

LIKE I SAID CHAPS,I MAKE TIME.......

I remember there was a guy on Saabcentral, a septic iirc, who did a 2.3 crank in a b202. I'll try and find a link to it.
