Car Model: 93 1.8T
Hi all,
just bought my first Saab at the ripe age of 54, what looked like a cheap runaround, now might be something more unusual. Car is badged as 1.8T however I noticed on the little green slip I have at the moment as proof of owner ship it says 1998cc.I called a turbo repair place to make enquiries, gave them the registration and he says its a rare car , being a 201bhp model and it shouldn't be badged as a 1.8 but says they didn't actually make any 1.8s anyway. How did he get that from the vehicle reg? I bought the car because it was cheap having had the turbo go , and I thought it could go back on the road reasonably cheaply if I was sensible and that I might get a two or three years out of it being as its only just over 100.000 miles .
Firstly, anyone any ideas how I identify the actual engine for the purpose of making sure I order any parts correctly . And then what model I actually have bearing in mind the boot says 93 1.8T ? The owners book I got with the car simply says on the reg card 93 sport and gives what I assume is the chassis number .Supposedly I'm the third owner and the old chap I got the car off has had it over 12 years .But if it is indeed the 210 hp engine I'm assuming will be a different drive altogether. Thanks in advance for any help

Welcome to UKSaabs

I don't know much about the 9-3 1.8T, but it is indeed a 2.0T detuned for the company car market, when company car taxes were calculated on engine size, IIRC.

There are plenty that can give you more info. If you post a topic in the Workshop - Mechanical, Running Gear, Electrical & Servicing, you will get the information required on parts. Please adhere to Title rules as indicated at the top of the page in the orange box.

1.8t is actually 2.0t but should be 150bhp, not 200+, that's the 2.0T (capital) Aero.

Confused yet?

I should add that the 1.8t (150bhp) and 2.0t (175bhp) have the same hardware (except maybe the flywheel) but a different ECU map. The 2.0T has a different turbo plus another map.

There may be other differences, I'm certainly no expert, that's just what I managed to work out when shopping for one.

The 1.8t 150bhp can be made to have more power than the 2.0T 210bhp
with a remap that gets 220bhp if that confusing.

Yes. Only four 4 cyl petrol engines offered. None very rare.

1.8i - an 1800cc non-turbo Vauxhall engine with 122hp. possibly the rarest model!
1.8t - a 2 litre turbo 150 hp. Just badge engineering.
2.0t - same engine as the 1.8t with a different tune giving 175hp.
Aero - with the 2.0T engine, much the same as the others but with a bigger turbocharger, and in early models bigger injectors. 210hp.

That's it... :)

If you look at the VIN number on the V5 doc or in the windscreen, or on the door pillar, there's a decoder here

http://www.saabtechtalk.com/forum/index.php?topic=789.0

That will give you the factory spec.

sgould, thank you for the vin decoder, very helpful, it would appear that it is indeed a 150 hp model in arc trim.Where the turbo guy got the idea it was an aero engined car from I can't imagine .

Thanks and I'll keep you all updated on the progress.
