Son needs a new back box on his mk7 Fiesta 1.6TDCi.
Back box isn't that expensive but he was thinking about putting a straight pipe in.
It's not that loud with the back box removed as it has the Cat obviously and a fair size centre box.
Question is some people say it will improve performance with a straight pipe and others say it will be faster with the back box in place.
So any ideas, thanks.

Its not going to add any performance on a little diesel.
And diesels sound awful with loud chav exhausts.

Could save a bit of weight and will probably work out cheaper too. Go for it.

The best exhaust for a turbo'd lump is no exhaust. The rear box doesn't really restrict that much but any restriction removal will help the engine breathe. You'll probably hear a bit more turbo whistle and get a lower rumble.
Plod is unlikely to be too fussed if it's not massively louder than stock.

As there is a cat and probably dpf upstream they will be far more restrictive than a silencer box at the end of the system. As such removal is likely to make precious little difference in terms of performance or flow.

It's also likely to have naff all effect on noise.

Personally I would stick a new pattern part on. It's a mass produced Ford, it won't cost the earth.

Thanks folks,
Fil, his Uncle could have welded a straight pipe in.
Not been on here today but in the end he went for a new pattern back box as Rich has said.
Was £59, he cut the pipe at the back, it was one of them ones that faces down.
He trimmed that and fitted a nice tail pipe trim with twin pipes..it looks good.
Dave, I had a cherry bomb on my first car.
Quad / Paul, he drove it with the back box removed and it was a bit loud actually driving it so decided against that.

Looks tidy that. Better than a straight pipe.

A straight pipe sends the sound behind the car at speed so although it is a bit noisier it is distinctly quieter than driving a car with no rear box.
