The car at peak power in 5th (or 6th) will not accelerate any further.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I think it was the Fiat X1/9 1300 5-speed that could only achieve its top speed in 4th gear. Change into 5th and it would slow down because it didn't have enough power at the lower RPM to maintain its top speed. It may, of course, apply to other cars too.

Yes, my Mk1 Astra SR, 5th gear was so high geared.

Was this back when 5th was known as an overdrive? Which I understood to be a crusing gear for motorways and the like.

9000 Aero would do 70 in second, and more than 130 in 3rd. It was still pulling, but i ran out of straight on the circuit.

the lotus carlton achieved its rediculous top speed in 5th rather than 6th for the same reason

As some have hinted above the top speed will be exactly the same as before unless you have changed the gearing or increased the Rev limit, you will just get there faster/easier.

Not if the power available as stock is insufficient to ever reach Vmax due to wind resistance.

Now you are being pedantic, I agree with what you say but wouldn’t expect it to be a factor on a 9-3.

I'm not, it's absolutely a factor. No way can a 9-3 hit the rev limiter in top without a serious power hike (and any hike between standard and the power necessary to hit the rev limiter will carry with it an increase in top speed).

No, it was a 5-speed gearbox when they were just starting to become popular (after the Ausin Maxi having had a 5-speed gearbox for years). Overdrive was something rather different.

The lotus carlton also had a higher top speed in 5th than 6th

The OG 9-3 will hit 100 mph in 3rd IIRC. Although mine was helped along with various mods and a rather large Chinese turbocharger.

You might be right, although mine was a longblock which had a longer 3rd gear than the shortblock. It was definately well over the ton in 3rd.

The 70 in second scared quite a few of my friends the first time they went out. Although my expression of "this is all perfectly normal" was as scary aparently!

Thats mad. My sons 1992 2.0T, which was originally a LPT, just about makes 75 in 3rd. 50 In 2nd i think. As you could imagine, now its running a TD04-15T, its absolutely manic through the gears.
