I'm trying to get a shorter box to fit to a post 94 9000 block, Nick T's site makes a interesting comment...

''F40 is the 6 speed in the new 9-3. It is a very robust gearbox with TWO output pinion shafts! this is part of the reason they are quite noisy and clunky. It only in the new ecotec bolt pattern. If you can find one of the super rare euro diesel 6 versions it will bolt up to the B2x5/4 engines.''

So I bought one, but it won't bolt up to my 234R engine

9000 box....okay

Image

9/5 aero box.....okay...box on right...box on left is F40, SAAB 9-3 1.9 TiD GEARBOX 6 SPEED (2005) bolt pattern miles off :?

Image

9/3 5 speed 2.2 TDi...okay

The F40 box is 1 inch narrower than the others and cable operated too which is what I want but it won't fit the 9000 block, so Im a bit stuck on what box I should be looking for. The 9/3 5 speed box might do, but I'll need to swap input shaft for a 9000 one....still need to do some more checks though...

Isnt the six-speed diesel box you want only fitted to a couple of years of vauxhalls?

possibly ones in between the 2.2 isuzu (also 1.8 in some vauxhalls) and the 1.9 fiat engine

its the V6 diesel box as fitted to some vectra's
this uses the isuzu diesel and has the "old " bolt pattern
Not many about but should be cheap as I would guess no-one would want them

F40 6 speeds is the generic name for all these 9-3SS gearboxes.
What will bolt on to the B2x4/2x5 engine is the 6speeds gearbox off an 2.2 Tid 9-3SS MY2004.
Any older or other F40 style will not fit ;)

Ask me how I know: I did this conversion on my conv. Viggen ;)
And I even have another F40 that fits right here, besides me

you should look for a bell housing marked GM 12787 363 0822880
That`s what is relevant in terms of mating it to the B2x4/2x5 block!
and yeap, that`s a cable operated gearbox ;) ....see pics!

I even have the gear shifter and the cables, together with the clutch kit for 9-3SS (dual mass flywheel) and a short shifter from Nick T. (genuinesaab) with the hard mounts, also from Nick ;)

I Know that I am new, and this post is old, but i am willing to make this mod to my 9-3 and I have some questions. I registered just to speak with Avdumitrascu but, as i am newbie i am not allowed to use pm. So i am going to ask it here and re-bump this post. I think it is quite interesting.

First of all let me introduce myself. My name is Javier I am from spain, and I own a 1999 SAAB 9-3 Cabrio with 200k Km by now and I have changed quite things on it.

Larger Injectors -> Lucas 408cc From Saab 9000 Aero
Front Sub-Frame add -> just to keep things tight :)
rear antirroll bar, i think it is 22mm
Brake booster from a 9-5 1998-2001 is compatible.
Brake pump 25mm from a 9-5 Aero
rear brakes calipers and disks -> 300mm from a 9-5 aero
front brakes caliper carriers and disks -> 308mm from 9-5 Aero
T-5 Injection mod to 255hp on a dyno.

It has been quite time with my saab, and i have been partner on Club Saab España some time, but not this days, now i make my things just to upgrade what I see is improvable, so the next step is gearbox.

Ok, first of all I have two cars to mod, one 1999 200hp@255hp T-5 and one T-7 Aero 205hp@240hp (this one is not dyno-ed so i do not know if it has more or less hp, just what T7 tunning says more or less). I hope this mod is valid for both cars.

Second Do I have to use dual mass flywheel? because i do not like it at all.

and Thrid,do I need gear shifter from a 9-3ss cables and all those things and then swap to my old gear shifter housing? or the housing is equivalent and is bolt-on?

Are also needed those 9-3 SS transmission axles?, or can I dissasemble my gearbox and use old rod shifter nad old transmission axles?

Sorry for rebumping but is the only post found al over the net of a F40 swap for B204/B205 engines.

Thanks in advance :)

That's nice, I've tried the Sachs uprated cover plate with their organic and brass disc, which holds upto 620NM in practice but the F40 gearbox did not fair well after running that for a year. Bearings and seals were most unhappy but that said, it was a 220,000 miles gearbox.

Where did you get that sprung plate and how much?
