Yes! One look at the engine with the top cover off is quite enough for most sane individuals to find a compelling reason to be somewhere else.

But the timing belt isn't too hard and space isn't restricted, although you will need the top engine mount off. The belt change interval is quite long and this may be because the belt does not drive all 4 cams: the inlet cams are gear driven, so only the (outer) exhaust cams are belt driven. This makes the task considerably easier and I can confirm that no special tools are needed.

Most of the expense involves not so much the belt (do NOT buy one from SAAB - even with a hefty discount, they are a king's ransom!) but the tensioner and the two idlers.

I will have the destructions as a .pdf (Do NOT rely on WIS - it misses out a crucial stage!). I have compiled some info on this for one or two other members, so all I have to do is locate it and send as an attachment to a PM. Will sort later today (and tell you the SAAB book time for the job - which, from memory isn't far fetched).

I can confirm that changing the timing belt is pretty easy. I've never done one before and even I managed it! One thing to note though, when fitting the new belt it needs to go over the cam pulleys and the pump pulley, THEN over the tensioner. Don't spend 3 hours trying to do it the wrong way round like I did.
