Has anyone dealt with the timing chain snapping on a B207R 93 engine, ive seen most of the faults the newer saabs throw up but not this one.

I just wondered if anyone had experience of the level of destruction that occurs when they snap and is it a full new engine or can they be repaired ( new valves etc )

Thanks

Andy

I'm not sure but one of the newer engines has rocker arms that snap before the valve stems get bent...

Hi it's the 1.9 diesel that's breaks the rockers, I used to be the workshop controller of a Saab dealer and I've seen that quite a few times but not with the petrol aero.

Sorry Andy, I know nothing at all about the B207, which I assume is a GM lump?

Hi
chains usually only snap if the guides have come loose, guides snapping there fastening bolts is quite common, usually the balance guides.

Well I've got it stripped down and its broken the followers on the front cam but the valves seem free so I might have got away with that so I carried on and stripped the timing chain cover off and found that the front chain guide had broken and the top runner has dissapeared along with part of the front guide.
I thought that it was going to be a nice and easy fix new guides cam followers and stick it all back together but as usual there's a slight problem ! While trying to locate all the missing bits I found why the problem has happened, the front guide has two bolts securing it to the block and head and the top one has sheard leaving 90% of its thread snapped off in the head with very poor access to get in and try and get it out !

The next step will be to try and drill it out and re-tap the thread if that doesn't work I've got another engine to go in seems a shame to go to that extent for just one bolt !!!

I'll try and get some pics of what to check if you've got a rattle because it could be one broken bolt !!!
