When you put a new thread up in the Workshop please put your car's year and model in the post subject/thread title, along with just a brief indicator of the problem.

Car Year - Car Model: Brief description of issue. EXAMPLE- 1999 9-3. Problems starting when hot.

For Tech II issues or help requests please state the following in your title ''Tech 2 help required - state issue and your location ''.

Please also add as much information as you can about the problem, to your post.

This will help us to help you, without having to ask basic details such as what car you have.

Nb. Generic thread titles for truly generic issues that genuinely are not model or variant specific (such as "how do I change the spring in an forge wastegate actuator") are acceptable

Hi there, newbie and first post. I have had AA look at my car and they advise probably the pump or steering rack are the problem as no leak of fluid. I was hoping someone could give me a rough idea of how much each problem may cost. Car still looks good, just over 90,000 on clock and runs well however I have already spent a grand on it this year between MOT, service and new battery and also have an advisory on my MOT that brakes will need done next time and that's in Jan. The car has sentimental value however I can't afford to keep throwing money at it. Any help/advise would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the forum.

What is the problem with the steering? Why did you get the AA to look at it?

Have you looked at the fluid, IIRC there is a seal that can go in the rack allowing the oil to mix with the fluid but I don't really know the NG9-3.

which part of the country are you? If you really want to be in a SAAB you should keep it
especially at 90k, try and find another with that mileage, petrol or diesel? you don't say
what's wrong with the power steering? does it go stiff between turns? if you can't afford
a £500 repair bill try Lucas power steering conditioner, ebay big 1 litre bottle around £15
drain the tank and put it in there probably get you through the mot, if the brakepads have
more than 2mm left that's a pass as well, happy days!

Hi guys, thanks for the feedback. Bear with me as I'm not very mechanically minded!! So the steering has become stiff when turning the wheel, it came on suddenly as a permanant feature but on hindsight it had been coming and going for a few days but I thought I was imagining it. I had the AA out as i was unsure whether I was safe to drive it. He checked the fluid level, it was fine, I've never had to top it up and never noticed any leaks below car altho I don't park in the same place daily. This lead him to think it is a pump or steering rack issue. I drove home and there are no noises when I turn the wheel just having to put effort into turning the wheel. I have it booked in for 15th and the mechanic making me wait 2 weeks for an appt as he needed a clear day for such a big potential job has not helped!! I did try to Google costs but posts were 4 years old and in dollars!! I may have to rethink getying job done if its gonna run over £1000. I also dont want a large dignosis bill if i don't go ahead. I'm in Edinburgh, it's a petrol car. I hope this is an appropriate place for asking this.
