When you put a new thread up in the Workshop please put your car's year and model in the post subject/thread title, along with just a brief indicator of the problem.

Car Year - Car Model: Brief description of issue. EXAMPLE- 1999 9-3. Problems starting when hot.

For Tech II issues or help requests please state the following in your title ''Tech 2 help required - state issue and your location ''.


Please also add as much information as you can about the problem, to your post.

This will help us to help you, without having to ask basic details such as what car you have.


Threads with non-compliant titles will be moved to The Pit Lane (in which no replies can be posted, but the OP can edit the thread - upon which the thread will be released to the workshop forum, note compliant threads will be moved back when the mod/admin team next visit the Pit Lane. if your thread has been sat in the Pit Lane for 24hrs+ after editing, pm Tech II to request release)

Nb. Generic thread titles for truly generic issues that genuinely are not model or variant specific (such as "how do I change the spring in an forge wastegate actuator") are acceptable

I think my gearbox is on the way out.

Over the last few weeks it’s become difficult to engage 1st, and now it’s hardly engaging at all.

3rd and 5th are not much better. It regularly pops out of gear in 1st, and sometimes 5th, 3rd sometimes not smooth to engage. Also regular crunching.

2nd, 4th and Reverse are pretty much OK.

Does this sound like a new gearbox, and if so what's the average cost?

I’m at 137k, new clutch about 18 months ago. 5spd box.

Is this the 6sp box ?.
As there are known issues on the shift linkage with those, and a simple repair is possible with a Mod.

Edit. Sorry, just seen the 5sp....

OK panic over. :)

My car went to my local garage (indy neighbour), who found the issue was a broken pin on the cable that selects the up and down motion of the gear stick. Therefore it was not positioning or engaging in the gearbox correctly.

I suspect this has been getting gradularly worse over a long time, as I've noticed it becoming more difficult to select 1st in particular over the last few years. In the last few weeks 1st has become worse on a daily basis, and yesterday couldn't engage it at all.

Luckily a temp fix in place, and new pin on order to fix it.

A massive relief as was on the verge of having to decide if i should sell/scrap it, which i really really don't want to do. :|

EDIT: Since this temp fix was put in place (resecuring pin), the gear selector is the best it's felt in years!
